Each night in the observatory I start out hopeful that StellarMate will perform reliably, but too often the session ends up being spent troubleshooting. I find myself reworking focus, trying to get guiding sorted out, platsolving works 50% of the time, moving between Basic and Expert modes to confirm what I’m actually capturing, and working through small quirks that take time and attention away from imaging. I genuinely believe in what StellarMate can become, and I really appreciate the all-in-one approach behind it. The concept is strong, the capability is there, and it is the kind of solution I want to succeed. At this stage though, for me at least, consistency is the most important thing. I need a system that allows me to focus on collecting data rather than managing the software itself. Over time, I’ve realized I’m spending more energy trying to keep things running smoothly than actually imaging. While the ZWO ecosystem is more locked down and won’t directly control my observatory (yet), I do have a few alternative ways to work around that so I can get back to imaging regularly. After several months of working with StellarMate in my environment, I’ve come to accept that even though the platform is impressive and full of potential, there are still enough small inconsistencies that it continues to interrupt my workflow. This isn’t a dismissal of the platform or its future, just an honest reflection of where I’m at right now. I plan to keep a close eye on how StellarMate continues to evolve, because I’m genuinely excited about where it’s headed. For the time being, though, I need something predictable and dependable night after night. I don’t want to become an expert in maintaining software. I want to become a better imager, and right now I just need reliable data. Explorer of the cosmos, one photon at a time. I capture the universe using an arsenal of 12 telescopes including the TEC 180FL, Takahashi Epsilon 160ED, Takahashi FSQ-106EDX4, and Takahashi TOA-130, paired with elite imaging systems like the ZWO 6200MM Pro with Chroma filters, ZWO 2600MM, and the ATIK 16200 HPS-C. |
