It looks like we've got more activity in the atmosphere that will let more of us northern-hemisphereans enjoy the beauty of the auroras!

Projections from NOAA are indicating a "G4" category geomagnetic storm headed our way from a large CME observed from 1/18.
Currently the forecast indicates lattitudes as far south as Colorado are likely to witness the glorious display, but it is also reported that the exact conditions of the impact could result in the phenomena being visible even further south than currently projected.

Yes! The S30 Pro wide angle camera is ready!

Ky3 in Springfield Missouri showing G4 severe geomagnetic storm - this is going to be awesome!

A G4 geomagnetic storm, classified as "Severe," is

Tonight, Missouri could feel the effects of a G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm - a powerful “space weather” event triggered when the Sun hurls a massive cloud of electrified gas at Earth (a Coronal Mass Ejection, or CME). When that surge slams into our planet’s magnetic field, it can make the whole system vibrate like a struck bell — beautiful in the sky, and occasionally messy for the tech we depend on.

What a G4 storm means

  • Severity: Second-highest on NOAA’s scale (G4 out of G5). This is just one step below “Extreme.”

  • Cause: A fast, dense CME packed with charged particles colliding with Earth’s magnetic environment.

What it can do (including here in Missouri)

  • Power grids: Can trigger voltage control problems and force grid operators to make rapid adjustments to prevent wider issues.

  • GPS & navigation: GPS can become less accurate, and low-frequency radio navigation can be disrupted.

  • Satellites & spacecraft: Increased risk of surface charging, sensor glitches, and tracking/positioning issues.

  • Radio communications: Can cause HF radio dropouts and patchy signals, especially at higher latitudes.

The upside: auroras pushed far south

This is the kind of storm that can inflate the aurora oval dramatically, meaning the Northern Lights may spill much farther from the poles than usual. If conditions line up, the aurora could be visible much farther south — potentially into the central U.S., including parts of the Midwest. In other words: Missouri is in the conversation tonight.

I will be sure and post some photos and time-lapse here!
