Vaonis Atlas: What’s Coming? Let the Speculation Begin

Okay folks, what do you think Vaonis is getting ready to release? This is the place for all your wild speculation about the new Vaonis Atlas, whether you have a reasonable theory or have been studying a shadow in the teaser for forty minutes.

The reveal is scheduled for October 15, with more teaser chapters coming September 22, September 29, and October 6. The line getting everyone’s attention is the wording reportedly appearing in promotional emails: “Atlas is not the next telescope. It is something we have never built before.” That certainly gives us more to chew on than another sensor upgrade.

We’ve been snooping through patent and trademark records, too. Vaonis filed for the Atlas name in France back in May 2025, followed by a UK application that November. The filings cover telescopes and astronomical equipment, but we haven’t uncovered anything that tells us exactly what’s inside the box.

An all sky camera? A tracking mount? A companion device for an existing Vaonis telescope? Or a completely different approach to automated astrophotography? Those ideas are circulating, but none is confirmed. Even the assumption that Atlas will be a conventional smart telescope deserves a second look.

Tell us what you think it is, what you hope it does, and what would make you reach for your wallet. If you’ve spotted a clue, share it and tell us where it came from. Just label the guesses as guesses so we don’t accidentally turn somebody’s wish list into tomorrow’s specifications.

My wish list starts with better images and fewer things to fiddle with in the dark. Your turn.

I am going to throw one guess out there. I think Atlas might be some kind of smart all-sky imaging system.

The name Atlas would make sense if the idea is to capture or map large portions of the sky instead of pointing at one object like Vespera does. Maybe something you leave outside that automatically watches the sky, captures larger areas and identifies what is happening overhead.

Vaonis keeps calling this a "new era" so I have a hard time believing Atlas is just another Vespera with better specs.

Probably completely wrong, but that is my guess for now.

Could Vaonis Atlas be an 80mm smart telescope?

Some folks are floating the possibility of an 80mm Vaonis Atlas smart telescope, and I’ll admit that idea appeals to me. Vaonis keeps pointing back to its beginnings with the “10 years ago” teaser, which brings Stellina to mind. The original Stellina had an 80mm aperture, so could Atlas revisit that size with everything the company has learned since?

An updated 80mm instrument with modern imaging hardware and Vaonis’s current software would be a combination I’d like to see. But the anniversary language could simply celebrate the company’s history rather than hint at an aperture. Nothing we’ve uncovered confirms an 80mm Atlas or a Stellina successor.

An 80 would be a great move on their part, especially with the upcoming Draco. Or perhaps even trying to get ahead of the narrowband crowd.

However, this wouldn't be the first time they've peddled virtual vaporware (looking at you, Hyperia). 
Personally, the idea of an all-sky observatory does appeal to me, especially with winter coming and the Geminids, but knowing Vaonis, it won't be cheap.
