Rouz Astro is a company known throughout the astrophotography community for its precision-engineered imaging accessories and smart DIY solutions. At the helm is its founder, Rouz, whose journey into astrophotography began in the late 1990s, back in the film era, before digital sensors took over. What started with black-and-white images of the moon soon became a full-blown passion for deep-sky imaging, evolving into a constant pursuit of sharper detail, better signal-to-noise ratios, and improved equipment performance.
That drive eventually led Rouz to design and manufacture his own lightweight dovetail systems, rings, and telescope accessories, optimized for performance-conscious imagers. In this ScopeTrader interview, Rouz shares insights on imaging gear, mono versus color sensors, post-processing philosophy, and the future of astrophotography, alongside advice for beginners and a closer look at his latest hardware innovations. Rouz also walks us through the evolution of his personal imaging setup, including the design of his lightweight CNC-machined dovetail and ring systems, a product line born from a desire to reduce weight while improving performance and compatibility. Rouz Astro: My discovery of astrophotography began in the late 90’s. I was dabbling in black & white film photography and on one long and dark winter night I decided to take some close-up photographs of the moon. I was instantly captivated by the beauty of the night sky. Initially, I was just excited to image any object in the sky but as I progressed, it became about improving the detail and resolution. As time went on, the challenge of getting better results is what drove me in my quest to improve my set-up.
Rouz Astro: Given I was always looking for improvement and a higher signal to noise ratio, I was naturally pulled toward larger aperture reflectors – the latest being the Planewave CDK14 for which I later developed a unique kit paired with a modern CMOS full frame QHY camera and Astro-Physics mount.
Rouz Astro: I have always been a proponent of mono imaging for both planetary and deep-sky imaging. While it is more work, results are often superior, especially from light polluted skies where you can use narrow band imaging.
Rouz Astro: Our CDK reducer OAG Kit that allows users to image at a faster speed while being able to guide with an OAG and rotate & focus the camera remotely. It was not an easy product to design and manufacture, however the results are significant and we now have dozens of customers who would agree!
Rouz Astro: Pix insight is by far the most powerful imaging software in my opinion. I prefer to minimize the use of artificial image enhancing processes to achieve a more natural look.
Rouz Astro: The key here is to use an appropriate image scale and not be tempted by focal lengths that either your equipment or sky conditions can handle. Rouz Astro: I always minimize the use of artificial processes as much as possible and I do that by collecting the cleanest data possible. Also, I try not to over saturate colour, brightness or contrast.
Rouz Astro: For a beginner, I would always recommend a small imaging refractor with an equatorial mount (such as a ZWO AM3) and a cooled colour 1 shot camera (OSC) to begin with to not over complicate things.
Rouz Astro: New sensors for sure. Since I began my astrophotography journey years ago, technology has come leaps and bounds and it is exciting to think of what lies ahead in the sensor development pipeline. While AI processing can be very effective, I feel it detracts from the charm, authenticity and challenge that is astrophotography.
Rouz Astro: A key factor in my astrophotography progress has been my desire for sharper details. This called for a combination of larger aperture and better mount performance. I noticed that if I could significantly reduce the weight of mounting equipment such as dovetails, tube rings, clamps and brackets then I could achieve both these things. And so began my passion to design and produce high quality, ultra lightweight products not just for me but for fellow enthusiasts too.
Rouz Astro: The primary goal was to reduce weight. Traditionally, a typical set-up with more “old-school” gear would include pretty heavy dovetail bars, one on the bottom and one on top for accessories, and metal rings. The combined weight of the dovetails alone could reach up to 5 pounds. With our new hybrid dovetail system, that is now reduced to 1.5 pounds for the 11 inch combo (CNC bottom bar and carbon fiber top accessory bar) and 2.2 pounds for the 14 inch combo (CNC bottom bar and carbon fiber top accessory bar).

Rouz Astro: I would go as far as to say it is vital! By reducing the weight, we allow for less mass to be moved by the mount, thus enabling better auto-guiding and/or tracking performance, due to reduced reaction time and forces. Another advantage to that is that one can opt for a larger telescope while still operating within their mount capacity. With traditional all metal set-ups, the weight of rings and accessories could be greater than that of the scope itself. With our latest version of tube rings & accessories, we are even hollowing out the knobs and even offering optional titanium bolts to help reduce weight to the last ounce!
Rouz Astro: Yes. There is typically very little flexibility with mounting scope positions. Our unique pattern creates and allows for different ring spacing, different positions for balance, mixing dovetail sizes, styles and materials. It is more modern and compatible. Furthermore, there are about 12 different bolt spacings that are compatible with most brands.
Rouz Astro: Yes - we will in due course be launching rigid carbon composite dew shields that are designed to be integrated with motorized flat panels.
