The Al Nagler Saturnday interview with Eli Goldfine

Monday, March 30, 2026 by

Editor’s Note: Albert “Al” Nagler, founder of Tele Vue Optics and one of the most beloved figures in amateur astronomy, passed away on October 27, 2025, at the age of 90, fittingly with a telescope in hand. For more than half a century, Al’s innovations transformed backyard observing, from the immersive Nagler eyepiece to the finely crafted refr...

Galaxies previously unseen discovered with help from physicist

Tuesday, March 24, 2026 by

I chase photons that perhaps left their homes before our oceans found their tides (if you believe photos actually travel anyway). Those photons slide into a sensor as if they are shy travelers, and if I treat them with patience they will draw a picture that was always there, just hidden under the noise. The same impulse guides the researchers behind the Hobby Eberly Tel...

Seestar S30 Pro review: Upgrade or not

Monday, March 16, 2026 by

Anyone else love the classic rock sound of the band Journey? As a musician and singer myself, in my opinion, Steve Perry and his vocals on Don't Stop Believing are just plain incredible, and for a long time they felt untouchable. Then there is Deen Castronovo. Most people know him as Journeys drummer, but fewer have actually heard him sing. The first time you do, it...

How to use a telescope

Saturday, March 7, 2026 by

So you’ve just unboxed your brand-new telescope. Maybe it’s a sleek refractor, a sturdy Dobsonian, or one of those smart telescopes that runs on an app. Now you’re standing there asking what just about everyone asks the first time they look at a telescope and think seriously about using it - what now? Telescopes come in all kinds - big ones, small o...

Astrobiscuit: The nerd who made the universe fun

Monday, December 29, 2025 by

In 2017, Rory Griffin—better known as Astrobiscuit—asked his wife for a telescope. She rolled her eyes. “It’ll just gather dust,” she said. But the first night he pointed that Sky-Watcher Mak 90 into the London sky, Jupiter floated into view. Its moons lined up like tiny pearls, and Rory was hooked. Suddenly, astrophotography wasn’t j...

Yuri Petrunin: The man behind TEC Telescopes

Thursday, December 18, 2025 by

When you sit down with Yuri Petrunin, founder of Telescope Engineering Company, the first thing you notice is his strong Russian accent. The second is how little he seems to care whether or not you’re impressed by it. He speaks modestly, carefully, and without pretense. He’s not trying to sell you something. He’s just telling you what he knows. And wha...

Pleiades star cluster meets Supermoon in the night sky

Thursday, November 6, 2025 by

You can observe a unique celestial pairing as the Pleiades star cluster aligns closely with the full Moon, commonly referred to as a supermoon. This alignment offers a distinctive visual contrast between the bright lunar surface and the faint blue stars of the cluster. The event provides a natural opportunity for both amateur and professional astronomers to observe and ...

Astronomy in November 2025

Wednesday, November 5, 2025 by

This month offers a bit of everything: a once-in-a-lifetime interstellar visitor passing through, a brilliant supermoon lighting up the sky, two bright comets fading out after their October glory, planets dancing in interesting ways, and even a couple of meteor showers (plus the promise of the auroras glimmering for those far north). It&rsq...

SVBONY SV520 telescope review: A 90mm beginner scope that works

Thursday, October 30, 2025 by

I’ve spent years peering through all kinds of telescopes, from inexpensive bargain-bin refractors to heftier setups costing well into the tens of thousands. When I got my hands on the SVBONY SV520, which is a 90mm aperture, 800mm focal length refractor bundled with an alt-az mount and a slew of accessories - I approached it with cautious optimism. This is a telesc...

Reflect Orbital satellites could roast the night sky!

Tuesday, October 7, 2025 by

Are you kidding me? As if the ever-growing wall of light pollution from every city, streetlight, and LED billboard wasn’t already bad enough, now we’ve got a startup that wants to beam sunlight back down to Earth at night. Reflect Orbital - backed by Sequoia Capital and Baiju Bhatt, no less - wants to fill the sky with thousands of satellites th...

October Super Hunter Moon brings a double treat with Harvest Supermoon

Thursday, September 25, 2025 by

The October full Moon in 2025 will bring a rare alignment of astronomical events. Known as the Hunter’s Moon, it will also be a supermoon and will serve as the year’s Harvest Moon. The combination makes it a notable moment for skywatchers, enhanced by close encounters with Saturn and the Pleiades star cluster. Above Photo Credit: The 18 September 202...

NOBLEX ultra-wide-angle anastigmatic eyepiece is here

Tuesday, September 2, 2025 by

When we talk about astronomy equipment, the conversation usually circles around telescopes, mounts, and cameras. Eyepieces are sometimes treated as accessories, when in truth they are the final translators between the light gathered by the telescope and the eye of the observer. The NOBLEX ultra-wide-angle anastigmatic eyepiece belongs to that class of optical tools that...

How ZWO changed amateur astronomy

Tuesday, August 26, 2025 by

There was a time in amateur astronomy when photographing the heavens felt as challenging as lassoing the moon - I've been there. A decade or two ago, if you told a backyard stargazer they could capture stunning nebulae and galaxies with affordable gear, they might’ve raised an eyebrow. Astrophotography was often the realm of costly CCD cameras, modified webcam...

Astronomy Picture of the Day

Hello World
Hello World - 2026-04-04 - NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day
From pole to pole our fair planet is captured in this snapshot from space, an evocative image from a window of the Orion spacecraft Integrity. From the spacecraft's perspective the Sun is moving behind Earth's bright limb along the lower right. Africa and the Iberian peninsula are in view on the pale blue planet's surface, while aurorae crown Earth's south and north poles at top right and bottom left. Commander Reid Wiseman took the historic picture on Artemis II mission flight day 2 (April 2), after the completion of the planned translunar injection burn. That burn boosted the spacecraft out of Earth orbit, sending Integrity and crew on a trajectory that will take them around the Moon and back again. That's a journey humans last made over 50 years ago.
