When we talk about smart telescopes, most of the conversation starts with hardware: aperture, sensors, focal length, filters, tracking, and resolution. But after using more than one smart telescope, I have become convinced that we sometimes overlook one of the most important parts of the experience: the app.
With a smart telescope, the app is mission control. It is how I connect, decide whether tonight is worth shooting, find a target, build a plan, manage files, process the result, export data, and decide what comes next.
That is why the Seestar App has impressed me. Weather, visibility, SkyAtlas, planning, stacking, tutorials, processing, file management, community tools, and AI all connect back to actually using the telescope.
The Seestar App starts helping before I even choose a target
One of the first things I noticed was how easy it became to move between Seestar devices after the initial setup. Once everything is configured, connecting does not feel like something I need to mentally prepare for every time I take a telescope outside.
Turn it on, open the app, connect, and move on.
I am a software developer. I troubleshoot technology all day, so when I finally get a clear night, I really do not want my hobby asking me to clock back in. I want to do astronomy.
That sounds like such a small thing, but with a smart telescope the connection is the front door to everything else. If that first step becomes frustrating, every feature sitting behind it becomes harder to enjoy. With Seestar, my experience has been refreshingly easy.
I also like the weather and visibility information sitting right at the top of the app. Before I even decide what I want to shoot, I can get a quick idea of cloud cover, Moon information, sunset timing, and whether the night looks worth building a longer session around.
I still use dedicated astronomy weather tools, and I am definitely not suggesting one visibility percentage should replace them. Weather has a cruel sense of humor. Every astrophotographer eventually learns that "clear tonight" can occasionally mean "clear everywhere except the exact twelve square feet of sky your telescope needs."
But having that quick information inside Seestar keeps me in the astronomy workflow and helps answer one of the first questions of the evening: is tonight worth setting up for a long session, or am I grabbing thirty minutes between clouds and calling it a win?
Recommended and Best Tonight help with the next question: "What should I shoot?" Some nights I already know. Other nights I just want to see what makes sense in the current sky. Instead of giving me a giant catalog and wishing me luck, Seestar gives me somewhere to start.
SkyAtlas takes that further and may be one of my favorite parts of the app. I can search for objects, browse the surrounding sky, check altitude, frame a target, and eventually tell the telescope to go there. I especially enjoy using the phone's orientation and compass because it helps connect what I am seeing on the screen with the actual sky around me.
Smart telescopes are becoming so good at finding objects that there is a risk we stop learning where anything is. Press M31, the telescope moves, plate solving happens, and Andromeda appears. Amazing. But I still want to know where Andromeda is.
SkyAtlas gives me the automation while still encouraging me to understand what is above my head.
I also love the built-in tutorials. They move from basic features into stacking, SkyAtlas, EQ operation, filters, file management, and more advanced workflows. I still read articles, watch YouTube, and fall down forum rabbit holes when I probably should be sleeping. That is part of loving this hobby.
Having help built directly into the app gives new users a path to grow instead of handing them a telescope and abandoning them after the first successful GoTo.
Planning is by far my favorite feature
I love astrophotography, and I also have a family. Those two facts occasionally disagree about what I should be doing at 11:30 at night.
Planning Mode helps solve that.
I can choose the objects I want, build a session, set imaging time, and let Seestar work through the plan. I can get the telescope outside, make sure everything is working, start the session, and then go back inside and be with my family while a little telescope quietly collects photons from a galaxy millions of light-years away.
I still keep an eye on the weather and telescope while a plan is running. Automation is useful, but I am not handing responsibility for rain or changing conditions over to the telescope.
For me, Planning does not remove me from astronomy. It lets astronomy fit into my life.
I can help with bedtime, spend time with my family, take care of things around the house, and still have a productive imaging session happening outside. That is a huge benefit of smart telescope automation that I do not think gets discussed enough.
Auto Plan makes this even better. If I know what I want, I can build the night myself. If I do not, Auto Plan can generate a session based on observing conditions, and I can run what it suggests or change the targets and timing.
For someone learning astrophotography, that is a great way to get direction without being locked into the app's decisions forever.
Stacking turns separate sessions into one project
Deep Sky Stack becomes more valuable the longer you use the telescope.
Maybe I capture an hour of the Rosette Nebula tonight, and then the clouds arrive because apparently I looked too happy. A week later I get another two hours.
Those sessions do not have to remain separate finished images. I can combine compatible captures of the same target from different observing sessions into a new stack.
That changes my thinking from "I photographed the Rosette" to "I am working on the Rosette." That is a much more traditional astrophotography mindset.
Tonight's good data can become part of next week's project, and next week's data can still be useful when I return to that target later. I can also review the saved images and remove bad frames affected by clouds, trailing, airplanes, satellites, or other problems.
More data is good. More good data is what we really want.
And when I want more control, I can export the FIT/FITS data and stack it myself in PixInsight, Siril, or another workflow.
Star Trails shows another side of what the app can automate. On supported Seestar models, it can create those long arcs caused by Earth's rotation without requiring someone trying it for the first time to manually build the whole workflow.
Most of the time in astrophotography we are fighting star trails, and then suddenly we decide we want them. That is part of the fun.
Video Stack brings stacking into Moon, Sun, and planetary imaging by taking frames from RAW video and combining them into a cleaner still image.
The important part for me is that Seestar makes several very different stacking ideas approachable without making someone understand all of the theory before they are allowed to try them. Let people create first and then the questions will come.
AI Enhance makes quick processing fun
AI Enhance has probably been the most fun part of post-processing for me.
I can rotate an image, crop it, change the aspect ratio, flip it horizontally or vertically, and let AI Enhance create a starting point. Then I can adjust Star Reduction, Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, and Denoising.
For someone who is not sure where to begin with post-processing, that is a very approachable way to start learning what each adjustment actually does to an astro image.
I especially love Compare.
A little more saturation, more contrast, reduce the stars, maybe a little more saturation, and twenty minutes later you have created a nebula that looks like it was hired to advertise a nightclub in Las Vegas.
Compare saves me from myself.
Being able to move between the original and edited version gives me an immediate reality check. Did I improve the image? Did I pull out useful detail? Or did I just make everything louder?
AI Enhance does not replace PixInsight, Siril, Photoshop, or other dedicated post-processing software, and I do not think it should. Those tools go much deeper.
Seestar's strength is giving me quick and approachable processing directly on my device. I can finish a short session, get a result I am happy with, and have something ready to share without opening several different applications.
When I want the deeper workflow, I can export the FIT data and do it myself. That is the balance I want.
My Album, Community, and AI keep everything connected
My Album becomes much more useful once the telescope starts filling with data.
I can see what I have downloaded to my phone and what is still sitting on the Seestar, work through different targets and capture types, and clean out files I no longer need. Being able to quickly see how often I have captured something and work through those sessions makes returning to an older target much easier.
I can also export JPG, FIT, or both. Sometimes I want the finished picture. Sometimes I want the astronomy data. Sometimes I want both.
The Seestar Community adds another side to the experience. Astrophotography gets more fun when you can share what you captured with people who understand why you are excited.
Family and friends may say, "Wow, that is beautiful." Another astrophotographer is more likely to ask how much integration you collected, what filter you used, what your sky conditions were, and how you processed it.
Those are the conversations that help us learn.
The Community lets users browse and share astrophotos, comment, join groups, and participate in challenges. Nearby makes that feel more local by showing work from other users in the area alongside light pollution information.
There is something fun about realizing another astrophotographer a few miles away may have been outside at the same ridiculous hour photographing the same nebula.
Then there is the AI Assistant.
I can ask setup questions, ask what I should shoot, ask about objects, and move from a question toward doing something with the connected telescope. In my own use, I have even been able to give it basic commands, including telling the scope to power off when I am finished.
I do not want AI to replace learning astronomy. I want it to make asking the next question easier.
Why Using the Seestar App feels like ZWO wants astronomy to grow
ZWO is a business. Of course it wants to sell telescopes.
But when I look at what the app encourages me to do, it feels like growing the hobby is part of the mindset too.
The app keeps encouraging me to learn the telescope, check the sky, discover another target, build a plan, collect more data, return to an old project, stack another session, process the result, export the FITS, and share what I captured.
That feels like more than an app designed to sell a telescope. It feels like an app designed to keep somebody interested in astronomy after they bought one.
There is a big difference between selling somebody a telescope and helping turn somebody into an astronomer.
Selling the telescope ends when the box arrives. Growing the astronomer happens afterward.
It happens when Recommended introduces somebody to a nebula they have never heard of, when SkyAtlas helps them understand where it is, when the first automatic image is no longer enough and they want the FITS, and when they stack multiple nights of their own data.
It happens when their kid comes outside and asks, "What are we shooting tonight?"
That is how hobbies grow.
I cannot sit in a ZWO meeting and tell you what motivates every business decision. I can only tell you how the product feels from this side of the screen.
It feels like passion is somewhere in the room. It feels like somebody building this stuff also loves astronomy.
My DWARF Mini comparison is really about the software
I still use and love my DWARF Mini. It is tiny, portable, capable, and remains part of my astronomy setup.
My frustrations have mostly been with the app. Sometimes the DWARFLAB app works great, and sometimes it gives me fits. Connectivity has occasionally been inconsistent for me, and some workflows still feel like they could use more polish.
That does not make the telescope bad. I like my DWARF Mini, I use it, and I plan to keep using it.
DWARFLAB has also added a star diffraction spike effect that I enjoy experimenting with. Used lightly, it can look pretty cool. Push it too hard, though, and the image starts looking artificial to me.
That is when I ask myself: am I processing my data or decorating it?
My personal preference is for the final image to stay connected to what I actually captured.
The Seestar editing workflow fits that preference a little better for me right now because AI Enhance gives me a starting point, Compare lets me check what I have done, and FITS export lets me leave the automatic workflow entirely whenever I want.
When I compare the two apps I am using today, Seestar simply feels more mature and cohesive.
That does not mean one telescope has to win and the other has to lose. I use both. I enjoy both. Competition between companies trying to make astronomy easier to enter is good for all of us.
Seestar is not perfect either. Software changes, bugs happen, new features need time, and dedicated astronomy software will always do some things better.
But most of the time, the Seestar App eventually disappears and astronomy takes over.
I stop thinking about the connection and the interface, and I start thinking about the sky.
That is where good astronomy technology should take us.
For me, Using the Seestar App does exactly that.
We are people who love the night sky. Give us a clear sky, some good data, another target to chase, and enough software to stay out of our way.
The Seestar App does a pretty great job of taking care of the rest.
