Astrophotographer Mike Shipman offers handcrafted log books for astrophotographers and visual astronomers, with detailed sections to track imaging and observational sessions. Each book is made to order and available for international shipping. Orders before Dec 10 aim for Christmas delivery.
Astrophotographer Mike Shipman has announced the continued availability of his handcrafted log books, designed specifically for both astrophotographers and visual astronomers. After a successful presence at recent star parties—Okie-Tex and Enchanted Skies—Shipman expressed gratitude to event organizers and attendees who purchased his unique log books. Each book is made entirely by hand, and he is now accepting new orders, with a special note for those aiming to receive their log books before Christmas. Orders placed by December 10 are likely to arrive before the holiday, although exact delivery cannot be guaranteed due to potential mail delays.

The Astrophotographers Log Book: 50 sessions
Shipman offers two versions of each log book: a 25-session and a 50-session edition. The Astrophotographer’s Log Book was developed out of a personal need for a reliable and organized way to document imaging sessions, ensuring that important data is consistently recorded and easy to reference. This log book has become an essential tool for those who want to keep detailed records of their astrophotography sessions for future reference and to enhance the overall enjoyment of the hobby.
The 50-session version of the Astrophotographer’s Log Book is priced at $39.95 and features four dedicated pages per session. Each page is meticulously designed to capture crucial information, including equipment used, location details, environmental conditions, exposure plans, and observational notes. The appendix includes a range of helpful resources such as a planning checklist, seeing and transparency scales, ethical guidelines for astrophotography, and common formulas and conversions. A customizable Table of Contents allows users to easily track specific targets and session details. The 6" x 9" size makes it convenient to carry, while the laminated covers provide durability in diverse conditions. Unique, handmade end papers and a built-in bookmark add to the personal touch, and the wire binding allows the book to lie flat—an advantage for note-taking under the stars.
The 25-session version of the Astrophotographer’s Log Book, priced at $22.95, offers the same features as the 50-session edition, but in a more compact form. Both versions are well-suited for beginners and experienced astrophotographers alike, offering a systematic way to track imaging progress and refine techniques. Shipman’s goal is to provide a practical and aesthetically pleasing solution to the challenges of documenting complex astrophotography sessions, filling a gap that generic journals and notebooks could not meet.

For visual astronomers, Shipman has created a dedicated Visual Astronomer's Log Book, also available in 25 and 50-session formats. This version includes specialized content for visual observers, such as sections for recording solar observations and a comparative magnitude chart in the appendices. Like the Astrophotographer’s Log Book, the Visual Astronomer's Log Book is crafted with the same attention to detail, ensuring that observers have a reliable resource for tracking their visual experiences across numerous sessions.

Orders for both log book types are open to international customers, including those in Canada. Shipman advises that international shipping is more economical when multiple books are purchased together, reducing costs per unit significantly. He is available to provide shipping quotes and separate invoices for international orders, and he encourages groups of friends to consider combining their orders to take advantage of these savings.
