Yuri Petrunin: The man behind TEC Telescopes

Thursday, December 18, 2025 by

When you sit down with Yuri Petrunin, founder of Telescope Engineering Company, the first thing you notice is his strong Russian accent. The second is how little he seems to care whether or not you’re impressed by it. He speaks modestly, carefully, and without pretense. He’s not trying to sell you something. He’s just telling you what he knows. And wha...

What-was-the-Star-of-Bethlehem

What was the Star of Bethlehem

Wednesday, December 10, 2025 by

As we consider the Star of Bethlehem one of the most endearing and yet mysterious aspects of the Christmas story. I say mysterious because it is only mentioned in one of the four New Testament Gospels, the Gospel of Matthew, and even there, it occupies a mere 8 verses, providing tantalizingly few clues as to its nature. That has not stopped people from speculating on wh...

How many telescopes do you actually need

Wednesday, July 2, 2025 by

I was about eleven years old when I met the night sky "officially". It was the late-1980s, and one calm summer evening in the Ozarks I lugged a little 60 mm refractor, bright red, wobbly tripod and all, into the backyard. I had a star chart from the box my telescope came in, along with a ton of raw curiosity, I pointed that modest telescope at the Moon. B...

Quantum mechanics and the design of the universe

Monday, June 17, 2024 by

Is there a purpose to the existence of people, or are human beings just a fortunate, accidental outcome of a very lucky sequence of events? "For the secular materialist, we are all made of stardust and here by chance and chance alone, with no particular purpose. When we die, we will turn back into the stardust from whence we came, with no afterlife and no accoun...

Exploring the Antennae
Exploring the Antennae - 2026-04-10 - Image by Mike Selby (NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day)

Some 60 million light-years away in the southerly constellation Corvus, two large galaxies are colliding. Stars in the two galaxies, cataloged as NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, very rarely collide in the course of the ponderous cataclysm that lasts for hundreds of millions of years. But the galaxies' large clouds of molecular gas and dust often do, triggering furious episodes of star formation near the center of the cosmic wreckage. Spanning over 50 thousand light-years, this stunning telescopic frame also reveals new star clusters and matter flung far from the scene of the accident by gravitational tidal forces. The remarkably sharp ground-based image follows the faint tidal tails and distant background galaxies in the field of view. The suggestive overall visual appearance of the extended arcing structures gives the galaxy pair, also known as Arp 244, its popular name - The Antennae. Artemis II: mission updates
