Tele Vue's new Nagler Type 7 eyepieces expand on the Apollo 11 design with an 82° field, 19 mm eye relief for eyeglass wearers, four focal lengths, adjustable eye-guard, and parfocality across sizes, launching in early summer 2025 through Tele Vue dealers.
Tele Vue has announced a new line of eyepieces called the Nagler Type 7 series. Tele Vue developed the Nagler Type 7 series as a natural extension of their limited edition Apollo 11 eyepiece, which had an 85° apparent field of view. The goal was to create a series that offers similar performance but with an 82° field, making it more accessible for eyeglass wearers. They also aimed to improve upon the long eye relief concept found in their Nagler Type 4 eyepieces.
Each focal length in the Type 7 series should match or surpass the Apollo 11 eyepiece in terms of full-field sharpness, contrast, distortion correction, eye relief, and viewing comfort, all within an 82° apparent field. For those of us who wear glasses, this is particularly appealing.
Here are some of the features of the Nagler Type 7 eyepieces
- Apparent Field of View: 82°
- Eye Relief: 19 mm, accommodating eyeglass wearers
- Focal Lengths: Available in 5.5 mm, 9 mm, 14 mm, and 19 mm
- Barrel Sizes: The 5.5 mm and 9 mm models have dual 2" & 1¼" barrels, while the 14 mm and 19 mm models are 2" only
- Weight: Ranges from 547 to 587 grams, depending on the model
- Parfocality: The series is designed to be parfocal throughout the four focal lengths and even between 1¼” and 2” modes when used with the Tele Vue Hi-Hat 1¼” to 2” adapter (ASF-8125).
- Compatibility: The 5.5 mm and 9 mm models are suitable for use with bino viewers and are DIOPTRX and FoneMate compatible. The 14 mm and 19 mm models are not recommended for bino viewers but are DIOPTRX and FoneMate compatible.
For those who don't wear glasses, the eyepieces come with an adjustable, locking eye-guard. This feature helps position your eye correctly to the exit pupil, preventing you from getting too close to the eyelens and blocking stray light that could affect the view.
Tele Vue has applied their known optical coatings and baffling features to these eyepieces to maximize contrast and complement the fully corrected field. This reveals natural star colors with pinpoint sharpness.
Tele Vue anticipates that the Nagler Type 7 eyepieces will be available through their dealers in early summer of 2025. Pricing details haven't been released yet.
