The Golden State Star Party (GSSP) is excited to announce that the 2025 event will take place from June 25 to June 29 at Frosty Acres Ranch in Adin, California. Over four nights, amateur astronomers, photographers, and curious skywatchers will gather to experience some of the clearest and darkest skies available in the western United States. Frosty Acres, chosen for its vast, flat, and unobstructed horizons, offers a natural surface free of rocks and minimal dust, ideal for both camping and setting up astronomical equipment.
Experience the wonders of the dark sky at the 2025 Golden State Star Party
Starting in January, advanced registration will open for attendees, with options to accommodate adults, children, and guests who want to experience this remarkable sky-gazing opportunity. For those new to astronomy, GSSP emphasizes that no telescope is necessary to attend; even binoculars or simply viewing the sky with the naked eye will reveal wonders. Veterans and newcomers alike will find a friendly, knowledgeable group ready to share views, techniques, and equipment tips in a supportive environment.
GSSP attendees can bring telescopes, cameras, and imaging gear, and for those who prefer convenience, a battery charging station will be available onsite. RVs are welcome, and careful planning will ensure ample space for parking near equipment and campsites. RVs over 20 feet will be directed to a designated area to minimize disruption. Additionally, attendees may arrive on Wednesday morning, June 25, when gates open at 9:00 a.m., and all participants must remain onsite during night hours to maintain a dark-sky environment.
To make the most of the event, all participants are encouraged to prepare for self-sufficiency: water and supplies should be brought as there is no water available on-site. The use of open fires, including BBQ grills, is prohibited to reduce fire risk; only propane camp stoves or grills set on stable surfaces are permitted. Fire safety is strictly enforced with rules designed to protect both attendees and the surrounding environment, including adherence to designated smoking areas and secure disposal of cigarette butts. Any disregard for these fire rules may result in expulsion from the event without a refund.
Pets are allowed under certain conditions: they must be leashed, quiet during sleeping hours, and owners are responsible for cleaning up after them. Noise control is a priority, and excessive barking or roaming pets will result in corrective actions. This year’s focus on quiet time from midnight to 10 a.m. will allow night observers the rest they need to enjoy all-night sky viewing sessions.

The event’s key principles revolve around respecting the dark sky, maintaining a peaceful environment, and preserving a collaborative atmosphere. Flashlights must be equipped with red filters, laptop screens shielded with red plastic, and the use of green laser pointers is strictly prohibited. Similarly, no vehicle traffic is allowed on the observing field after dark, ensuring a safe and undisturbed experience. Any need for vehicle movement must be limited to daylight hours or emergencies, with a maximum speed of 5 mph to protect all attendees and equipment.
On the third evening, GSSP will host a public night, inviting community members to experience the event. Registered attendees are encouraged to share their telescopes and insights with visitors during this night, helping foster a greater appreciation of astronomy.
Registration fees for adults are $75, with onsite registration available at $85 or a $25 nightly rate. Minors under 18 attend free, making GSSP an excellent opportunity for families to bond under the stars. As in previous years, GSSP anticipates a diverse gathering of amateur astronomers, astrophotographers, and space enthusiasts from around the country. The 2025 Golden State Star Party promises a memorable experience that showcases the wonders of the night sky, underscoring the importance of dark-sky events in preserving the natural beauty of our universe.
