There is something a little strange about opening the Seestar App, connecting to a telescope that is nowhere near you, choosing something in the night sky, and then watching an image start developing as if the telescope were sitting in your own backyard. I knew what ZWO Telescope Network was supposed to do before I tried it, but actually using it felt different.

My experience getting access to a shared Seestar was an absolute breeze. I gave the owner the account information needed to share the telescope with me, the device became available through the Seestar App, I connected, and suddenly I was using someone else's telescope through essentially the same interface I already knew.

There was no remote desktop, no VPN, and no computer sitting beside the telescope that I needed to figure out how to access. I was simply back inside the Seestar App doing astronomy. That simplicity is what makes Telescope Network so interesting to me.

ZWO describes Telescope Network as an internet-connected system that allows a Seestar to be remotely controlled when the telescope and user are in different locations. Once connected, the remote user can browse celestial objects, start GoTo and imaging, and watch live imaging progress through the app.

After using it, I understand why remote Seestars are starting to get so much attention. For the person receiving access, it can almost feel like somebody handed you the keys to a remote observatory.

Sharing a Seestar is surprisingly easy

The owner side starts with getting the telescope onto Telescope Network. The Seestar needs internet access through Station Mode, which connects the telescope to a Wi-Fi network rather than requiring the phone to remain directly connected to the Seestar's own hotspot. From there, the owner can open Me, enter Telescope Network, join the device to the network, bind it to an account, and configure the telescope for its remote observing site.

Once the telescope is online, sharing is where things become much more interesting. The owner chooses the Seestar inside Telescope Network, selects Share with Friends, and enters the phone number or email associated with the other person's registered ZWO account.

That point is worth emphasizing because you are not giving somebody your password. The other person uses their own ZWO account.

The owner can set when access begins and either choose an ending time or allow permanent access. ZWO currently allows a Seestar to be shared with up to five friends at the same time. A normal temporary sharing period can run for up to seven days, while Permanent Access can remain active until the owner removes it.

The owner also retains control over the relationship. They can see which shared user is currently accessing the telescope and revoke permission when needed. If access is removed while somebody is connected, ZWO says the remote session is terminated and control returns to the owner. The shared user also cannot turn around and share that telescope with somebody else.

From my side of the process, all of that technical access management almost disappeared. I received access, the telescope showed up, I connected, and then I started using it.

That is exactly how this kind of feature should feel. There is a lot happening behind the scenes, but I do not need to care about most of it when I am trying to photograph a galaxy.

It really does feel a little like a remote observatory


I want to be careful with this comparison because a shared Seestar is not magically the same thing as owning a fully automated observatory. But from the person sitting on the receiving end of the connection, it gets surprisingly close to the fun part.

A traditional remote observatory can involve telescope hosting, a pier, power management, internet access, cameras, weather monitoring, roof control, networking, remote computers, and somebody or something capable of dealing with the equipment when the physical world decides not to cooperate.

Then there is the cost. You may be renting telescope time, paying to host your own rig, or building enough remote infrastructure that your little hobby suddenly begins looking like a small NASA contract.

With a shared Seestar on Telescope Network, somebody else can give me access to a telescope under another sky and I can use the familiar Seestar interface from wherever I happen to be. That is why my first reaction was that it felt like having access to a remote observatory without the cost.

That statement needs an asterisk, of course. Somebody still bought the telescope. Somebody still provides the internet connection and power. If the Seestar is permanently installed somewhere remote, somebody needs to think about rain, temperature, security, physical obstructions, and what happens if the telescope needs hands-on attention.

Telescope Network does not make the physical telescope stop existing. It removes a huge amount of the technical distance between that telescope and the person using it.

The experience is not "free remote astronomy" in the literal sense. For a shared user, though, it can provide something that feels very much like remote-observatory access without requiring that user to rent telescope time or build a remote system of their own.

People are already using Seestars this way. One Cloudy Nights user discussing a remotely hosted smart telescope said ZWO's Telescope Network had worked nearly flawlessly for remote access and allowed them to operate the telescope through the normal Seestar App.

A Seestar owner on Reddit described controlling an S50 located in Zimbabwe from home in Miami and confirmed they were using ZWO's Telescope Network to do it. Another user described a remotely hosted S50 at Star Front Observatory and pointed to Telescope Network as a major step forward for remotely operating these small smart telescopes.

That is when Telescope Network starts becoming bigger than simply controlling a telescope from the other side of your house.

Think about what sharing can mean. A friend under darker skies could give you access to their telescope. Someone in another part of the country could let you capture an object that is poorly positioned from home. Eventually, people separated by much greater distances can begin sharing access to skies that are completely different from their own.

Northern and Southern Hemisphere observers immediately come to mind. If someone has a Seestar under Southern Hemisphere skies, a person thousands of miles away can suddenly have an opportunity to explore targets they cannot see from home.

That is pretty incredible because you are not downloading somebody else's finished image. You are using the telescope. You choose the target, start the observation, and watch your image develop.

There is a completely different sense of involvement in that.

What impresses me most is how little Telescope Network changes the part of Seestar I already understand. Once I am connected, I am not learning a completely separate remote-observatory platform. I am still using Seestar, and that is a big deal.

Remote astronomy has existed for a long time, but traditionally the word "remote" often meant adding more technology. Remote desktop software, VPNs, mini PCs, network configuration, power switches, and specialized observatory software could all become part of the process.

There are some very creative Seestar users who were already building systems like that long before Telescope Network existed. Older community discussions show people using Raspberry Pis, VPNs, Mac minis, remote desktop software, and other tools to reach a Seestar across the internet.

I love that people figured that out. I also love that I do not have to do it.

Telescope Network takes a problem the community was already solving and moves much of it into the application. That feels very similar to what I like about Seestar as a whole.

ZWO keeps taking things that experienced astronomers have been doing for years and asking whether the entry point can be made easier without completely removing the capability. Remote telescope access is another example.

There are limitations. The remote telescope needs a reliable internet connection. ZWO warns that server congestion can sometimes affect remote connections and that certain features may be restricted in remote mode. Its documentation also says the network used for Seestar's Station Mode bridge cannot be a mobile hotspot for Telescope Network operation.

I would also never treat a remotely connected Seestar sitting outdoors as completely unattended simply because the app can reach it. Rain still wins. Power failures still win. A physical problem still needs a physical solution.

Remote control is not the same thing as an automated weatherproof observatory.

But within those boundaries, my actual experience has been almost boringly easy, and I mean that as a compliment. I do not want remote networking to be exciting. I want the galaxy to be exciting.

The part that may matter most in the long run is that ZWO is not keeping Telescope Network confined to one smart telescope product.

ASIAIR 3.0 now includes Telescope Network. With an online ASIAIR, ZWO says users can remotely connect across the internet, control the system, view device status, and monitor imaging progress in real time. The same basic idea that makes remote Seestar operation feel simple is moving into much more traditional astrophotography equipment controlled through ASIAIR.

There is an important difference right now. Seestar already has the friend-sharing system I have been using. ZWO has said that remote device sharing is not yet supported in ASIAIR 3.0.0, although the company has publicly stated that it plans to add the feature in a future version.

That is where my imagination starts getting away from me a little.

Today I can be given access to somebody else's Seestar. Tomorrow the same network concept may increasingly connect full ZWO astrophotography rigs. A telescope does not necessarily have to belong to the person controlling it. It just needs to be online and intentionally shared.

Astronomy clubs could share equipment. Friends could trade observing time. A family member hundreds of miles away could join an observing project. Someone under exceptionally dark skies could give another person access to a view they simply cannot get from home.

Schools could eventually think differently about access to astronomy equipment, and those Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere friendships could get very interesting.

I am not saying ZWO has announced all of those uses. It has not. But the sharing model that already exists in Seestar makes those ideas much easier to imagine.

There is also one unanswered question hanging over Telescope Network: price.

Some versions of the interface have referred to the service as a free trial, which naturally led users to wonder whether remote access could eventually become a subscription. ZWO has responded publicly that Telescope Network remains under optimization and beta iteration and that it has made no announcement about future fees. The company says users can continue using it and that it will provide advance notice if major service changes are made.

So for now, I would not call Telescope Network permanently free because ZWO has not promised that. I also would not call it a paid service because ZWO has not announced that either.

What I can say is that I have used the sharing feature as it exists today, and the experience has been fantastic. Someone gave me access to a telescope somewhere else, I opened the same app I already use, connected, and started imaging.

For years, remote astronomy sounded like one of those parts of the hobby you got into after buying a lot more equipment, learning a lot more networking, and spending a lot more money.

ZWO Telescope Network makes it feel much closer.

Maybe the telescope is across town. Maybe it is under a much darker sky. Maybe one day it is sitting on the other side of the planet.

The distance almost stops being the interesting part.

The interesting part is that another person can say, "Here. Use my telescope tonight."

And a few taps later, you are looking up through it.
