Once you select a deep-sky target from the catalog, the mount will automatically slew to those coordinates, perform a plate solve to confirm its position, and begin tracking.
At this stage, you can engage the dual-camera feature. By selecting the dual-record function on the main imaging screen, the device commands both sensors to begin capturing data. The telephoto lens will begin its sequence of long exposures, stacking the incoming light to build a detailed image of your primary target. Concurrently, the wide-angle lens captures the surrounding star field. The resulting files are saved independently to the internal storage. This allows you to process a detailed close-up of a target like the Orion Nebula, while also possessing a wide-field image showing its exact placement within the larger constellation, all gathered during a single session.
Utilizing the Wide Lens as an Electronic Finder

Locating a specific target manually through a telescope with a narrow field of view is a well-documented challenge. Minor adjustments to the mount can cause the target to sweep entirely out of the frame.
The S50 Pro software utilizes the wide-angle camera to mitigate this issue. If you choose to navigate manually rather than relying on the automated catalog, you can tap the camera toggle icon on the live view screen. This switches the feed from the narrow telephoto lens to the expansive wide-angle lens.
This wider perspective provides immediate context, allowing you to identify reference stars or landscape features. Once you locate the general area of your subject in the wide-angle feed, you can utilize the tap-to-center function. By physically tapping the desired location on your screen, the software calculates the necessary coordinates and commands the motors to adjust the mount. The device will slew to place the selected area directly in the center of the frame. You can then toggle back to the telephoto lens, and the target will be centered and ready for imaging. It is a straightforward software solution that significantly reduces the time spent hunting for objects in the dark.
Transitioning to Scenic View
The functionality of the S50 Pro extends into daylight hours through a dedicated software setting. By opening the main menu of the application and selecting Scenic View, the device alters its operating parameters. It disables the nocturnal tracking rates and plate solving requirements, transforming the unit into an electronic spotting scope.
The setup process for Scenic View is minimal. You place the tripod on a level surface, power on the unit, and connect the application. There is no polar alignment required. The device immediately transmits a live, full-color video feed to your screen. This feature is particularly useful for observing local wildlife. Instead of requiring family members to take turns looking through a traditional eyepiece, the live feed can be viewed collectively on a tablet on the back porch.
While in Scenic View, you retain the ability to switch between the two lenses. You can use the wide-angle feed to scan a tree line or a ridge. When an object of interest is located, tapping the screen directs the mount to center the object, and switching to the telephoto lens provides a magnified, detailed view. The glass in the primary lens provides sufficient clarity and color correction to render daylight subjects accurately, avoiding the chromatic aberration common in lower-tier optics.
Executing Daytime Object Tracking
Tracking a moving subject at high magnification requires continuous, precise adjustments to the mount. Doing this manually with on-screen directional arrows often results in erratic movement. The Seestar application addresses this by incorporating an automated tracking algorithm within the Scenic View mode.
When you have a subject framed in the telephoto live view, you can activate the tracking feature by using your finger to draw a bounding box around the object directly on the screen. The software analyzes the visual data within that box, identifying the subject based on contrast and shape.
Once the software confirms a lock, the internal computer takes over the directional controls. As the subject moves across the landscape, the mount automatically adjusts its position to keep the framed object centered. This automated tracking allows you to focus on adjusting exposure settings, capturing still photographs, or recording video without having to manually chase the subject with the directional pad.
Expanding Operational Hours
