OSP is gearing up for an exciting 2024 event, inviting astronomy enthusiasts to join as speakers and volunteers. With free registration for speakers, new dining options, and volunteer opportunities, OSP promises a stellar experience. Discover the latest updates and how you can get involved!

The Oregon Star Party (OSP) is seeking speakers for its upcoming summer event. Enthusiasts and experts in astronomy are invited to share their knowledge and passion with attendees. Speakers will receive free registration, a savings of $100 on early registration or $200 for on-site registration. Interested individuals should email their first and last name, a brief biography detailing their astronomy experience or expertise, and their proposed topic to directors@oregonstarparty.org.

Oregon Star Party 2024: Call for speakers and exciting updates

Registration for the 2024 OSP is now open, and several changes have been implemented to enhance the experience. This year, Hillside Catering will be providing presold Star Dinners nightly, offering all-you-can-eat meals prepared on-site. Attendees are encouraged to include dinner purchases with their registration to assist the caterer in planning. A limited number of à la carte options, espresso, and on-site dinners will be available at a higher cost.

While vaccinations are recommended for attendees, they are not mandatory. Masks are welcome but not required. Unfortunately, showers will not be available at the event this year. Attendees are advised to use the Crook County Aquatic Park & Swim Pool in Prineville, located at 399 NE Garner St, Prineville, OR 97754, for a fee of $7.

As a volunteer-only event, the Oregon Star Party aims to keep costs low and maintain consistent vendor partnerships. Participants can add a small donation during registration to help cover growing expenses. Volunteers are crucial to the event’s success and will receive one raffle ticket per shift for a volunteers-only door prize drawing.

Previous attendees are encouraged to support the star party by signing up for two-hour volunteer shifts, ensuring smooth operations. After completing registration, volunteers can access the sign-up page to browse and select positions and time slots. First Aid Team Volunteers with medical experience and credentials are especially needed, and John Angell will coordinate this team. Volunteers will receive confirmation notifications after signing up.

For more information or questions about volunteering, contact the OSP Volunteer Coordinator. Join us for a memorable summer under the stars at the 2024 Oregon Star Party!

Oregon Star Party a stellar summer tradition

Oregon Star Party: A stellar summer tradition

Each summer, amateur astronomers converge at Indian Trail Spring in the Ochoco National Forest, about 45 miles east of Prineville, Oregon, for the Oregon Star Party. This remote location is chosen for its exceptionally dark skies, low humidity, and excellent nighttime viewing conditions.

In collaboration with Ochoco National Forest, the Oregon Star Party operates as a nonprofit organization, entirely run by volunteers. With a permit from the US Forest Service, the event spans 40 acres at Indian Trail Spring. Situated at over 5,000 feet elevation, the site offers a clear 360-degree horizon and some of the darkest skies found in the continental United States.

The OSP volunteer planning committee organizes various activities for youth and adults, secures door prizes, and coordinates with vendors for the five-day event. Onsite amenities include portable toilets, and the event is fully staffed by volunteers, including a dedicated first aid team.
