A $32 million telescopes antitrust settlement addresses claims that telescope manufacturers engaged in price-fixing. Eligible consumers who made qualifying purchases between 2005 and 2023 can file claims for compensation by May 20, 2025.
A significant class action settlement has been reached in the In re Telescopes Antitrust Litigation Indirect Purchaser Actions case. The settlement, valued at $32 million, stems from allegations that telescope manufacturers and related companies engaged in price-fixing practices, resulting in higher prices for consumers. This settlement affects individuals who purchased telescopes, including brands like Celestron, Meade, and Orion, between January 1, 2005, and September 6, 2023. These purchases must have occurred in certain U.S. states, including California, New York, and Florida, from authorized retailers or distributors.
Eligible class members have the opportunity to claim compensation through the settlement. To receive a portion of the settlement, affected consumers must submit a claim by May 20, 2025. Those who fail to file a claim will not receive any compensation but will remain bound by the settlement’s terms.
The lawsuit targeted companies such as Synta Technology Corp., Celestron Acquisition LLC, and several affiliates, accusing them of conspiring to inflate prices for telescopes and related products. These actions were claimed to have impacted consumers who purchased telescopes from authorized retailers in affected states. The settlement class includes anyone who indirectly purchased telescopes from these defendants during the specified period.
Telescopes antitrust settlement: File a claim to receive payment
Affected consumers who wish to be part of the settlement must file a claim to receive payment. Those who do nothing will forfeit their right to any settlement funds but will be bound by the settlement’s terms. Alternatively, class members may opt out of the settlement if they prefer to pursue individual lawsuits or objections related to the alleged price-fixing practices. The deadline for opting out or filing objections is February 13, 2025.
The settlement represents a significant effort to resolve claims of unlawful price-fixing in the telescope market, providing a potential refund to those impacted by the actions of the involved companies. Consumers with eligible purchases are encouraged to visit the settlement website for further details and to submit their claims before the May 20, 2025 deadline.
