If your idea of a perfect week includes star-filled skies, late-night telescope sessions, and conversations with fellow space enthusiasts, mark your calendar now—Chiefland Astrofest 2025 returns October 17-23. Expect dark skies, expert speakers from NASA and the astronomy community, gear swap meets, exciting raffle prizes, and a full week of unforgettable observing at Florida’s legendary Chiefland Astronomy Village.

There’s something magical about standing under a sky so dark and clear that the Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon, glowing like a cosmic river overhead. If you’ve ever longed for a place where the stars feel close enough to touch, where telescopes hum quietly across a field of fellow stargazers, and where deep conversations about black holes and backyard mounts flow as easily as coffee at midnight, Chiefland Astrofest is that place. Whether you're a veteran of this legendary Florida star party or considering your very first visit, this year’s Astrofest promises clear nights, fascinating speakers, and a welcoming community that feels like family.

Chiefland Astrofest 2025 Returns October 17 – 23: A Location Built for Astronomers

Every year, amateur astronomers from across the United States and beyond descend upon one of Florida's most renowned dark-sky destinations, the Chiefland Astronomy Village. This October, the beloved Chiefland Astrofest returns, offering a full week of celestial observing, top-tier astrophotography opportunities, educational presentations, equipment swap meets, and camaraderie under some of the clearest skies in the country. From October 17 through October 23, 2025, the Billy Dodd Memorial Observing Field will transform into a bustling hub for stargazers, imagers, and astronomy enthusiasts of all skill levels.

The Chiefland Astronomy Village (CAV) has built a national reputation for its pristine observing conditions and welcoming community. Located near Florida's west coast, approximately one hour west of Gainesville and two hours northwest of Orlando, the site offers accessibility without sacrificing the dark-sky experience.

The Village's premier observing area, the Billy Dodd Memorial Field, is a private five-acre site designed specifically for amateur astronomers. The field offers 360 degrees of unobstructed horizon, providing unparalleled views of the night sky. Flat, well-maintained ground makes setup easy for tents, telescopes, and RVs alike, while on-site amenities like flushable restrooms, hot showers, a clubhouse, electricity, and covered picnic areas ensure comfort during the event.

What truly sets Chiefland apart, however, is its combination of dark skies, excellent weather, and virtually insect-free conditions. October evenings typically bring cool, pleasant temperatures ranging from 55˚ to 65˚ F, with daytime highs between 70˚ and 80˚ F. These factors, coupled with Florida's late-year dry season, make Astrofest a prime opportunity for deep-sky observing, planetary imaging, and astrophotography.

What to Expect at Astrofest 2025

Chiefland Astrofest 2025 promises another exciting week filled with observing opportunities, educational presentations, social activities, equipment trading, and raffle prizes from some of the top names in the astronomy industry. Whether you're an experienced astronomer with a sophisticated setup or a beginner eager to learn, Astrofest offers something for everyone.

The event officially kicks off on Friday, October 17, with gates opening for RV arrivals at noon and general arrivals beginning at 2:00 pm. Attendees are encouraged to arrive before sunset to allow ample time for setup. The first evening features food trucks serving late-night snacks, fueling observers as they prepare for a night under the stars.

The schedule is packed with engaging activities throughout the week, highlighted by presentations from renowned speakers, swap meets for gear enthusiasts, and a raffle with prizes donated by leading astronomy brands.

Educational Presentations by Industry Experts

A major draw of Chiefland Astrofest is the speaker lineup, which includes experts from NASA, the amateur astronomy community, and the scientific equipment industry. These presentations are designed to both educate and inspire, covering cutting-edge space science, practical astrophotography techniques, and ways to contribute to real scientific research from your backyard.

Keynote Presentation: Dr. John Panek, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

On Saturday, October 18, attendees will have the unique opportunity to hear from Dr. John Panek, a Senior Mission Systems Engineer with NASA. Dr. Panek has over 27 years of experience in aerospace engineering, working on everything from science instrument technology development to mission control operations.

His keynote presentation, titled "The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope," will provide an inside look at NASA's next flagship mission aimed at surveying the sky in infrared light. The Roman Space Telescope will not only map vast regions of the cosmos but will also demonstrate critical technologies needed for future space telescopes equipped with large coronagraphs capable of directly imaging exoplanets.

For anyone interested in the future of space exploration and cutting-edge observatories, Dr. Panek's presentation is a must-attend event.

Hands-On Astrophotography and Citizen Science with Dr. Andy Howell

On Monday, October 20, Dr. J. Andreas Howell of the Alachua Astronomy Club will present "From Pixels to Light Curves: Using Seestar to Observe Eclipsing Binaries." Dr. Howell brings a wealth of expertise, having transitioned from military space defense operations to amateur astronomy with an emphasis on variable star observation.

His session provides a step-by-step guide for using smart telescope technology, specifically the ZWO Seestar, to capture scientifically valuable data on variable stars. Attendees will learn how to select optimal targets, capture data, analyze light curves using PixInsight's new VariableStarObserver tool, and submit findings to the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO).

Whether you're a beginner curious about variable stars or a seasoned imager looking to integrate your hobby with real science, Dr. Howell's talk is an ideal opportunity to enhance your skills.

Exploring the Science of Astronomical Spectroscopy

On Tuesday, October 21, Tom Field, Founder and President of Field Tested Systems, will demystify the world of astronomical spectroscopy in his presentation "You can almost touch the stars – An Introduction to Astronomical Spectroscopy." Spectroscopy, the science of analyzing starlight to determine chemical composition, temperature, motion, and more, is one of the most powerful tools in modern astronomy.

Field's presentation will provide attendees with a beginner-friendly introduction to the techniques and equipment used to break starlight into its component colors and extract meaningful scientific information. With affordable spectroscopes now accessible to amateurs, this session opens the door to a fascinating area of observational astronomy.

Swap Meets and Social Activities

Beyond the structured presentations, Chiefland Astrofest is a fantastic opportunity to meet fellow astronomy enthusiasts, trade gear, and relax in a welcoming environment. Swap meets on Saturday, October 18, and Wednesday, October 22, allow attendees to buy, sell, and trade telescopes, accessories, eyepieces, cameras, and other astronomy equipment.

Sunday, October 19, features the ever-popular raffle prize drawing, with items donated by major astronomy manufacturers. Tickets can be purchased during the event, and prizes will be on display at the pavilion Sunday afternoon. To complement the festivities, a hearty dinner of burgers, brats, and potato salad will be provided Sunday evening.

Food trucks will be on-site during the evenings, offering late-night snacks for those observing into the early morning hours.

Registration Details and Site Options

Due to the popularity of Astrofest and limited space on the observing field, pre-registration is essential. The event offers a variety of site options to accommodate different setups:

  • Tent sites (25 x 25 feet) with limited electricity are available for $100.
  • Regular RV sites (25 x 35 feet) with 15 Amp outlets are $150, while sites with 30 Amp outlets are $170.

Weather Contingency and Refund Policy

While October typically brings favorable observing conditions to Florida, weather unpredictability is always a consideration. In the event of severe weather, including hurricanes, the organizers have implemented a contingency plan.

If a hurricane forces the postponement of Astrofest 2025, the event will be rescheduled for the next new moon week, November 14 – 20, 2025. All registrations will automatically transfer to the new dates. If attendees are unable to make the rescheduled event, refunds will be provided, minus a $20 administrative fee.

Optional Purchase Protection is available during registration, offering a full refund of registration costs in the event of unforeseen circumstances, such as illness, family emergencies, or transportation failures.
