DayStar Filters operates in Warrensburg, Missouri, where precision optics and practical engineering come together under one roof. The company designs and manufactures specialized optical filters and instruments used by astronomers, researchers, and solar observers around the world. Their work blends careful craftsmanship with scientific discipline, beginning with raw glass and ending with instruments that reveal the intricate details of the Sun.

The Warrensburg facility houses complete optical capabilities. Lenses, flats, and mirrors are generated from 10 millimeters up to 24 inches, with polishing reaching 36 inches. The team performs glass coring, milling, and machining on site, along with advanced optical coatings that include evaporation, e-beam, ion assist, and RF sputtering. Measurements and testing are carried out with Zygo and Twyman Green interferometers, a 1.3-meter spectrometer with 0.02-angstrom resolution, and tunable laser systems capable of even finer spectral precision. Additional verification is done with Shack Hartmann wavefront sensors and Harvey bandpass transmission testing to ensure consistent optical quality.

DayStar also maintains a full machining and electronics department. Their production floor includes multi-axis CNC lathes and mills, gear hobbing equipment, anodizing, and powder coating systems. The facility integrates CAD and CAM throughout its operations. Electronic design, PCB fabrication, pick and place assembly, and environmental testing are performed in-house. The site operates on more than thirty nine thousand watts of solar power that sustain much of its daily production.

DayStar Filters is led by Jen Winter and Fred Bruenjes. Jen is a former NASA Solar System Ambassador and an experienced astrophotographer who has personally tested every optical system that has left the company since 2006. Her long history of eclipse expeditions, astronomical outreach, and field experience has made her a respected voice in solar observation.

Fred Bruenjes is an electrical engineer and the founder of Moonglow Technologies. He oversees design of lens prescriptions, electronic systems, and machine control software for DayStar’s production lines. His background in circuit design and his lifelong curiosity about astronomy bring both precision and creativity to the company’s engineering work.

Together, Jen and Fred have shaped DayStar Filters into a company that treats light as both a teacher and a tool. Every component is made with care, tested with discipline, and built with one purpose in mind: to help others explore and understand the Sun.
