Astrophotography planning usually starts with a question that sounds simple enough: where will the thing I want to photograph actually be?

The Sun, Moon, Milky Way, planets, and stars are predictable. We have plenty of software capable of telling us when something rises, where it will be in the sky, and which direction we need to point the camera. The harder part comes when the photograph is about more than the sky.

What if I want the Moon sitting behind a mountain peak? What if I want the Milky Way core rising over a particular ridge? What if the Sun is technically in exactly the right position, but a hill or building blocks the shot from where I planned to stand?

That is the problem Astro Scout is trying to solve.

Astro Scout is a browser-based planning tool created by Mo, a solo developer in Basel, Switzerland. Instead of stopping at a traditional map with celestial lines drawn across it, Astro Scout places the Sun, Moon, Milky Way, planets, stars, and other celestial information against the terrain and skyline of the place where the photographer actually plans to stand. There is nothing to install, and the developer says the browser-based interface also works well from a phone.

I spend enough time looking at astronomy software that another planner would not normally grab my attention immediately.

The 3D terrain idea did.

Knowing where the Moon will be is useful. Knowing whether the mountain you drove an hour to photograph will actually line up with it is much more useful.

Astro Scout starts with where you are standing

The basic planning model is straightforward.

You search for a place or enter coordinates, place a camera position, and then place a target. Those two points become the foundation of the plan. Astro Scout calculates the relationship between the photographer, the landscape, and the sky from there.

That approach makes a lot of sense for landscape astrophotography because composition is often about much more than whether a celestial object is technically visible.

Imagine wanting the full Moon rising directly behind a church steeple.

The church is not moving. The Moon's path can be calculated. The difficult part is figuring out exactly where you need to stand and when those two things are going to line up from that position.

Astro Scout lets you work through that problem virtually before getting in the car.

The same idea applies to Milky Way photography. Maybe there is a ridge, lake, old building, rock formation, or tree line that you want beneath the galactic core. Instead of looking at a direction arrow and trying to picture the final composition in your head, the software lets you explore how the sky and foreground line up together.

The planner also includes framing guides for full-frame and APS-C cameras in both portrait and landscape orientation. That gives photographers another way to judge whether the composition they are planning will actually fit the image they intend to make.

That is the kind of detail I appreciate because there is a big difference between knowing an alignment technically happens and knowing whether you can actually photograph it with the gear you plan to bring.

Scrubbing through time makes the plan come alive

Once the camera and target are placed, time becomes the other half of the equation.

Astro Scout allows you to move through the selected date while the Sun, Moon, planets, stars, and Milky Way change position across the sky. The daylight arc shows altitude throughout the day, helping visualize how those positions evolve rather than giving you only a single rise or set time.

This is where the 3D view starts becoming more interesting than a normal rise-and-set calculator.

A Moonrise time might say 7:42 p.m.

That does not necessarily mean you will see the Moon at 7:42 p.m.

If a mountain sits between you and the horizon, your actual first view may happen later.

That distinction matters a lot when a photograph depends on an alignment that may only last a few minutes.

Astro Scout's official site describes the goal pretty clearly: show the sky over real terrain so photographers can check whether a ridge blocks a shot, when the Moon clears the skyline, and what focal length makes sense before making the drive.

That is the part of this tool that I find most useful.

It is not simply telling me where the Moon is.

It is trying to tell me what the Moon may look like from where I plan to be standing.

The 3D sky is not limited to the Moon and Milky Way

The obvious audience for Astro Scout is landscape astrophotography, but the sky model goes beyond just Moonrise and Milky Way compositions.

The developer says the 3D sky includes the Sun, Moon, planets, stars, Milky Way, and deep-sky objects. The DSO support can be used to check whether a target may be blocked from a particular imaging position.

That could make Astro Scout useful even when the terrain is not part of the finished photograph.

Anyone imaging from a backyard with trees, rooftops, or hills already knows that "above the horizon" and "visible from my telescope" are not always the same thing.

A target can technically rise hours before it clears the oak tree behind the house.

Anything that helps visualize those obstructions ahead of time can save a lot of waiting around in the dark.

Saved views and shareable links also make the planner more useful for something you are working on over time. You can build the composition, save the view, and return to or share the plan later rather than recreating everything every time.

That could be particularly useful if several photographers are planning the same event or location.

Instead of saying, "Stand somewhere over there and point roughly this way," you can share the actual plan.

The tutorials make Astro Scout easier to understand

Astro Scout also has a growing tutorial section, and I think that is especially important for software like this.

A 3D planning tool can sound great on a feature page and still leave somebody staring at the screen wondering what they are actually supposed to do first.

The current tutorials cover placing the camera and target, understanding the daylight arc, finding nights when the Milky Way core is visible, planning a Moon alignment against a mountain peak, and using the astro events calendar.

That tutorial about planning a Moon alignment is probably one of the best demonstrations of what makes the software different.

The interesting question is not simply:

"When does the Moon rise?"

It is:

"Where do I need to stand for the Moon to rise behind that?"

That is a much more photographic way of thinking about astronomy planning.

The tutorials also help make the software approachable for someone who may understand photography but not necessarily every astronomy calculation happening underneath the interface.

You do not need to begin by learning celestial mechanics.

You can begin with the photograph you want to make.

Astro Scout Free versus Pro

Astro Scout currently has a free version and a Pro tier.

The Free version costs $0, does not require an account, has no usage limits, and does not expire. It includes the 2D map, place search, the full 3D celestial sky over a flat horizon, and every timing calculation Astro Scout generates. The developer's  announcement also lists saved views among the free capabilities.

That is a pretty generous way to introduce somebody to the software.

You can actually use the planner, learn how the camera-and-target system works, explore the sky, and see whether the workflow makes sense to you without immediately starting a countdown on a trial.

The main limitation of the Free tier is right there in the description: flat horizon.

You still get the celestial calculations, but you do not get the realistic terrain that makes Astro Scout especially interesting for landscape photography.

Pro, available for $60 a year, adds photorealistic 3D terrain, satellite imagery on the 2D map, faster place searching, and the astro events calendar. The underlying celestial calculations remain the same, but instead of putting the sky over a generic flat horizon, Pro puts it against a much more realistic representation of the actual landscape.

For a Moon or Sun alignment against a mountain, building, or other foreground, that is obviously the part that changes the experience the most.

The Pro billing model is also different from the automatic monthly subscriptions that seem to follow us everywhere.

Astro Scout Pro is sold in prepaid blocks of three months, six months, or twelve months. You make one payment for the period you choose, and nothing automatically renews. When Pro expires, the account returns to the Free version while keeping the account and saved views.

I like that structure.

Astrophotography already has enough subscriptions.

If somebody mainly wants the terrain tools for Milky Way season, a photography trip, or a specific astronomical event, being able to buy a block of time without another automatic renewal hanging around is refreshing.

The shot vs The Plan

Astro Scout brings accuracy and it's useful but the terrain still has limits

The developer says celestial positions are calculated to about one arcminute, which is intended to make the system useful for landscape alignment work such as putting the Moon behind a peak, the Milky Way core over a ridge, or the Sun through a particular opening.

The terrain is a different story, and the developer is upfront about that.

The photorealistic landscape is photogrammetric rather than survey-grade, and the quality can vary depending on the area. Coverage may also be thinner in remote regions, where the system can fall back to elevation-based terrain.

That is an important limitation to understand.

I would absolutely use a tool like Astro Scout to decide whether a trip and composition make sense.

I would not use it to decide whether my feet are going to be six inches from the edge of a cliff at midnight.

There is still a place for satellite imagery, scouting in daylight, local knowledge, and basic common sense.

The terrain model does not need to be survey equipment to be useful.

The real question is whether it gets you close enough to determine that the sky, landscape, timing, and camera position have a realistic chance of producing the photograph you have in mind.

Astro Scout has plenty of room to grow

Astro Scout is still new, but what it is trying to do already makes sense.

The developer has talked about a future Sun and Moon alignment calculator that could take things even further by calculating when and where to stand for a specific composition.

That could become one of Astro Scout's strongest features. Even now, though, the appeal is pretty clear. It is not just showing where something will be in the sky. It is helping photographers understand how that sky will line up with the landscape in front of them.

For Milky Way photographers, eclipse chasers, and anyone planning a Moon or Sun alignment, that can be the difference between hoping the shot works and showing up with a real plan.

Sometimes astrophotography is about being ready when the sky cooperates. Sometimes it starts with knowing exactly where to stand.
