Visitors can explore solar observing, enjoy expert talks, and browse unique gear during the 7th annual NJAA open house and astro flea market 2025, which brings together hobbyists, collectors, and first-timers for a full day of discovery in scenic Voorhees State Park.
The New Jersey Astronomical Association (NJAA) is once again opening its doors to the public for an exciting day of astronomical exploration, hands-on learning, and telescope trading at the 7th annual NJAA open house and astro flea market. Taking place on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the NJAA Observatory in Voorhees State Park, High Bridge, New Jersey, this completely free event offers something for everyone, amateur astronomers, seasoned stargazers, and curious families alike.
The NJAA has long been a staple of the regional astronomy community, and its open house events have steadily grown in scope and popularity. This year’s gathering promises to be the biggest yet, with an expanded lineup of activities, demonstrations, guest speakers, and a thriving astronomy flea market where gear-hunters can buy, sell, and trade telescopes, eyepieces, filters, mounts, and more.
Astro flea market 2025: 7th annual NJAA open house and astro flea-market
While the main event is centered on telescopes and space-themed equipment, attendees will also be treated to a variety of live demonstrations and interactive activities. One of the most exciting features is the opportunity to observe Venus in broad daylight, a thrilling challenge that many casual observers have never attempted. Solar observing will also be available through specialized filtered telescopes, providing safe views of sunspots, prominences, and solar granulation.
Radio astronomy demonstrations will open up a lesser-known but fascinating branch of skywatching, while hands-on telescope cleaning and tune-up stations will allow guests to breathe new life into their gear. AstroVerse will be on-site offering free telescope tune-ups, giving attendees a great excuse to bring out their dusty Newtonians or misaligned refractors for expert help.
Educational talks will be held throughout the day, bringing together local experts and enthusiastic hobbyists to share tips, stories, and the latest updates from the world of astronomy. Whether you're trying to decide between your next CMOS camera or looking to get started with visual observing, these presentations will offer practical advice and inspiration.
The NJAA observatory itself will be open for tours, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the organization’s equipment and facilities. It's a rare chance to peek into a professionally maintained astronomical observatory nestled within one of New Jersey’s most scenic state parks. For many, this part of the event serves as a gateway into deeper involvement with the NJAA and its regular public nights, outreach events, and member-exclusive observing sessions.
At the heart of the event is the astro flea market. This isn’t your average swap meet, here, you’ll find everything from vintage unitron mounts and rare Plössl eyepieces to modern astro-cameras and autoguiders. Many seasoned attendees know this is one of the best chances all year to find affordable gear or pass along unused equipment to new enthusiasts.
And it’s completely free to participate. Sellers can register online and bring their gear without paying a table fee, and buyers get unlimited browsing rights for free as well. This open, community-focused format has made the astro flea market a standout event in the northeast astronomy calendar.
Every attendee has a chance to win the grand prize, a brand-new ZWO SeeStar S30 Smart Telescope, valued at $349. This all-in-one imaging system has become one of the most talked-about compact astrophotography tools of 2025, and the chance to win one for free adds an extra layer of excitement to the event.
No purchase is necessary to enter the raffle, and the prize will be given away at the end of the day. It’s just one more reason to stick around until the final hour, especially if you're feeling lucky.
This is a family-friendly event through and through. Kids are not just welcome, they’re encouraged to attend and explore. Between the educational talks, telescope demos, and the sheer novelty of looking at Venus during the day, there’s more than enough to spark a lifelong interest in astronomy.
Food will be available on-site, ensuring that no one has to leave for lunch and miss out on a single raffle, trade, or tour. With the crisp early fall weather in High Bridge providing the perfect backdrop, the event is as much a celebration of the season as it is of the stars.
The NJAA’s annual open house embodies everything that makes amateur astronomy such a unique hobby: community, curiosity, and a shared sense of wonder. There’s no gatekeeping here, just an open invitation to come, learn, share, and enjoy the night sky. Whether you're selling an old equatorial mount or helping a first-timer glimpse the Sun’s chromosphere, your participation contributes to something bigger.
There’s no registration required to attend as a visitor. Just show up at Voorhees State Park on Saturday, September 13, 2025, between 10 AM and 4 PM. If weather interferes, the rain date is set for Saturday, September 20. Sellers should pre-register through the NJAA Open House website to ensure a smooth setup and listing on event materials.
