The Seestar S50 Pro is here! In this exclusive Seestar S50 Pro First Look: Insights from ZWO Founder Sam Wen, we sit down with Sam to explore the new smart telescope, the technology and ideas behind its design, and what it means for the future of astrophotography.

The Seestar S50 Pro has arrived, but the more interesting story may be what it tells us about where ZWO believes smart telescopes are headed next.

For the September issue of ScopeTrader, we sat down with ZWO founder and CEO Sam Wen for an extended conversation about the development of the S50 Pro, the compromises behind its design, the growing overlap between smart telescopes and traditional astrophotography systems, and what may come next.

Sam is not simply the executive running ZWO. He is a software engineer, amateur astronomer and astrophotographer himself, and throughout our conversation it became clear that many of the decisions behind Seestar are rooted in a very specific philosophy: make astrophotography increasingly capable without returning all of the complexity that smart telescopes were originally intended to eliminate.

That becomes particularly interesting with the S50 Pro.

The new telescope brings a 50 mm aperture, 260 mm focal length, a four-element APO optical system, a much wider imaging field than the original S50, an upgraded mechanical drive system and equatorial imaging capability. It also raises some obvious questions.

Why keep the 1/1.2-inch sensor format instead of moving to something larger?

Why wasn’t active sensor cooling added?

How much does the 50 mm aperture actually matter compared with the S30 Pro?

How close does ZWO believe a smart telescope can ultimately get to a conventional astrophotography rig?

And perhaps most interestingly, what happens when smart telescopes begin becoming sophisticated enough that the distinction between the two starts disappearing?

Seestar S50 Pro First Look: Insights from ZWO Founder Sam Wen. Why ZWO Built the S50 Pro?

We began by asking Sam what the S50 Pro was intended to accomplish that the original Seestar S50 could not.

Sam explained that the central philosophy behind Seestar has not changed. ZWO wants to lower the barrier to astrophotography while continuing to increase what users can accomplish with a completely integrated system.

The S50 Pro, however, is intended to push considerably further toward the capabilities normally associated with conventional astrophotography equipment.

Among the improvements Sam highlighted were the redesigned optics, substantially larger imaging field, wide-angle camera, improved structural design and a precision drive system intended to reduce backlash and improve tracking stability.

That last point becomes particularly important when the S50 Pro is operated in equatorial mode.

S30 Pro or S50 Pro?

One of the obvious questions is why someone would choose the considerably larger S50 Pro when the S30 Pro already includes many of the same software features.

According to Sam, the answer comes down primarily to two pieces of hardware: aperture and the mechanical drive system.

The 50 mm aperture provides substantially more light-gathering capability than the 30 mm system while also increasing resolving potential. For smaller deep-sky targets, that additional aperture and longer focal length can translate into noticeably more structure and detail.

Sam pointed specifically to M16 and the Pillars of Creation as an example where the difference between the two telescopes becomes much easier to see.

But aperture is only part of the story.

The S50 Pro also incorporates a precision drive system designed to improve tracking stability and reduce backlash, something that becomes increasingly important as users begin taking advantage of longer exposures in equatorial mode.

Why Not Use a Bigger Sensor?

We also asked a question many experienced astrophotographers are likely to have.

If ZWO was already increasing the aperture and redesigning the optics, why continue using a 1/1.2-inch, 8.29-megapixel sensor rather than moving to a larger format?

Sam’s answer was revealing because it gets directly to the philosophy behind Seestar.

A larger telescope does not necessarily require a larger sensor. Instead, ZWO approaches the telescope, sensor, optics, mechanical system, software and price as a single integrated design.

Increasing the sensor size would affect far more than the camera itself. It could require changes to the optics, physical dimensions, processing requirements and ultimately the price of the telescope.

More importantly, Sam did not rule out larger sensors in future Seestar products.

Then We Asked About Cooling...

With a larger chassis, a 10,000 mAh battery and exposures becoming longer, we wanted to know whether ZWO had seriously considered active sensor cooling.

They had.

But Sam explained that cooling introduces considerably more engineering complexity than simply attaching a cooler to the back of a camera.

Seestar is intended to remain a highly integrated, essentially maintenance-free telescope. Reliability, power requirements, thermal management and mechanical design all become part of that equation.

For the S50 Pro, ZWO ultimately decided that active cooling did not fit the overall balance they were trying to achieve.

That does not mean the company considers the subject closed.

Sam told us ZWO continues exploring ways to improve image quality during longer imaging sessions, and those solutions may not necessarily depend entirely on conventional active cooling.

And this is where our conversation began getting considerably more interesting.

We went on to ask Sam:

- Whether smart telescopes could eventually outperform the results many people achieve with manually assembled astrophotography systems.

- Where he believes the next major breakthrough will come from: sensors, optics, software or something else entirely.

- Whether ZWO would consider building a monochrome Seestar with an automated filter system.

- What engineering work went into producing pinpoint stars across the S50 Pro’s field.

- Why ZWO completely redesigned the optical system rather than simply updating the original S50.

- What experienced astrophotographers may misunderstand about the direction smart telescopes are heading.

Sam’s answers provide a much broader look at what ZWO is building than the specifications of a single telescope.
