A streamlined planetary Capture App Laminar 1.0 is now available. It's mad for Mac and adds real-time quality analysis, SER workflow, and Metal acceleration.

Laminar 1.0 is a Mac native planetary capture application that aims to bring real-time analysis, modern performance, and a streamlined workflow to astrophotographers who image the Moon and the bright planets. Built for Apple Silicon, it concentrates on fast reliable capture, clear feedback while recording, and simple review on the desktop so that sessions are easier to plan, execute, and evaluate. The result is a focused tool that respects the way planetary imagers actually work at the telescope and at the computer.

The capture loop stays fluid so you can adjust focus and exposure with confidence while monitoring quality in real-time. The interface fits the Mac, from the look and feel to the way files are handled, which reduces friction on long nights and short windows of good seeing. By centering the essentials and eliminating clutter, the app keeps attention on the target and on the details that matter most to final image quality.

A core capability in Laminar is real-time frame quality analysis. A live graph displays frame sharpness as you capture so you can verify focus and immediately recognize moments when the atmosphere steadies. This direct feedback shortens the loop between adjustment and result, and it helps you decide when to keep rolling or when to tweak settings. Instead of waiting to load a file in stacking software to find out if a run was worthwhile, you can gauge session quality on the spot and make better use of clear sky time.

Smart setup guidance with sky and seeing scores

Before a single cable is connected, Laminar provides Sky Quality and Seeing scores. These scores synthesize weather and atmospheric data into a quick assessment that helps you decide whether conditions are promising enough to set up. By combining sources into a simple readout, the app saves time and reduces guesswork, which is especially valuable when clear windows are brief and gear is heavy or temperature sensitive.

Automatic tracking and fast Metal powered previews

During capture, Laminar automatically tracks the planet so the analysis region follows the disk frame by frame. This accommodates small nudges, mirror shift, and other minor drift without forcing you to stop and realign. Live preview is accelerated with Metal so Bayer demosaicing runs on the graphics processor and delivers smooth color without dropping frames. You get a reliable view of the data as it is recorded, which supports better call making in the field.

SER recording playback and Quick Look on the desktop

Laminar records to SER with full metadata, including observer name, telescope details, notes, and precise timestamps. The same files can be reviewed immediately through SER playback and Quick Look in Finder, so you can skim captures without opening another application. This simplifies triage and review, keeps your focus within the Mac desktop, and reduces the number of tools needed during and after a session.

Camera support system requirements and pricing

At release, Laminar supports ZWO ASI and PlayerOne cameras, with additional camera families on the roadmap. The app requires an Apple Silicon Mac such as M1 or later and macOS 15 Sequoia or newer. Laminar is free to download and use for basic capture. An optional one time Pro upgrade priced at $34.99 unlocks real time quality analysis, Sky Quality and Seeing scores, advanced region of interest controls, and several additional capabilities. There is no subscription, and the Pro features activate instantly within the app.

This first release keeps scope intentionally tight in service of a reliable core experience. There is no filter wheel control, no mount control, and no ASCOM or INDI support in this version. Those additions are planned alongside expanded camera compatibility. The priority is to make capture rock solid, quality assessment useful in practice, and review fast on the desktop, then layer in device control and broader integrations with care.

Planetary Capture App: An all Mac pipeline with the Strata companion

For imagers who prefer an all Mac workflow from capture through processing, the companion application Strata handles stacking and post capture adjustments. Strata is available in beta through TestFlight, and together the two apps aim to cover the entire planetary imaging pipeline without leaving macOS. Laminar provides clean SER data with rich metadata, while Strata focuses on stacking quality and efficient processing so that the handoff is smooth and the final images benefit from the same design priorities.

Laminar 1.0 is available for compatible Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 15 Sequoia or later, with the Pro upgrade offered inside the app. Planetary imagers who want to evaluate the full workflow can request access to the Strata beta through TestFlight while it remains open.
