PiFinder version 3 coming soon

Posted on Friday, August 9, 2024 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

PiFinder recently announced the impending release of PiFinder Version 3, which promises to deliver significant hardware and software upgrades. This announcement follows a brief period during which assembled PiFinders have been out of stock on PiFinder.io, a move that marks the initial phase of the release process.

PiFinder version 3 upcoming release announced

The next iteration of PiFinder hardware, anticipated to be available in approximately two weeks, comes with a completely revamped software release featuring a more user-friendly interface. The new software aims to simplify the user experience, catering to both new and seasoned PiFinder users. As the development and finalization of the hardware continue, more units are being built and photographed, with detailed information set to be shared in the coming days.

PiFinder V3 pre-ordering and availability

Pre-orders for PiFinder Version 3 will commence towards the end of the week, around August 11th, with shipments expected to begin around August 17th. Following the initial release, PiFinder anticipates maintaining continuous availability of the new units.

PiFinder Version 3 remains an open-source project. The gerber files and STL files necessary for creating a Version 3 PiFinder will be publicly available. However, the new design incorporates a surface mount board and components that are not feasible for hand assembly. For those interested in DIY builds, the Version 2 PiFinder remains the recommended option, with kits and parts for Version 2 continuing to be available.

Both Version 2 and Version 3 PiFinder units will run the same software, ensuring full compatibility between the two versions. While Version 3 will feature some enhancements and improved aesthetics for those purchasing completed units, the core functionality will remain consistent across both versions.

As the final touches are being put on the new hardware, additional details and updates will be shared on the PiFinder.io website and the PiFinder Discord channel. This includes further insights into the full package of Version 3, addressing any questions and providing a deeper look into the new features and improvements.

The release of PiFinder Version 3 marks an exciting development for the PiFinder community. With the promise of enhanced hardware, a more intuitive user interface, and continued open-source support, the upcoming release is eagerly anticipated. More detailed information will be shared as it becomes available, ensuring that the community stays informed about the latest advancements and opportunities with PiFinder Version 3.
