SQA85 super quintuplet astrograph released by Askar

Posted on Monday, October 14, 2024 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

The new SQA85 by Askar is an 85mm aperture quintuplet Petzval astrograph designed for users who demand exceptional clarity, ease of use, and versatility. Featuring high-end SD glass and a fully integrated Petzval optical system, the SQA85 offers an unrivaled level of precision for full-frame imaging without the need for additional flatteners.

With a focal length of 408mm and a fast f/4.8 focal ratio, the SQA85 delivers sharp, clear images that appeal to both amateur and professional astrophotographers. The optical design incorporates a quintuplet lens configuration, including two SD glass elements that ensure exceptional correction of chromatic aberrations. The star point performance of this telescope is remarkable, with the central star point achieving an RMS radius of less than 1.6 microns and corner stars remaining below 2.5 microns. This precision ensures perfect focus and minimal distortion across the entire frame.

The SQA85 is built to handle full-frame imaging, boasting a 44mm image circle that fully supports large sensor cameras. This capability makes it a strong choice for astrophotographers who need high-quality edge-to-edge illumination, as the SQA85 guarantees 85% relative illumination even at the corners, significantly reducing vignetting. The inclusion of a modulation transfer function (MTF) chart further demonstrates the SQA85’s high resolution, with MTF values exceeding 0.9, confirming its superior clarity and contrast.

Crafted with premium CNC machining, the SQA85 is built for durability and ease of use. The optical tube assembly (OTA) measures 403mm when the retractable dew shield is contracted, extending to 439mm when fully deployed. This retractable design not only protects the lens from unwanted light but also helps prevent dew formation, ensuring optimal performance during observation sessions.

The integrated tube ring system is another highlight, featuring enlarged hand screws that allow for quick setup and adjustment without the need for additional tools. The lightweight, hollow design of the tube rings helps reduce overall weight while maintaining structural integrity. The system also includes six M4 and M6 threaded holes on both sides of the ring, providing ample flexibility for mounting additional accessories or attaching a second OTA for dual observation setups. A multifunctional handle on top of the tube ring further enhances this versatility, featuring a slotted design for easy installation of finder scopes and other astronomical accessories.

At the rear end, the SQA85 includes a 360° high-precision rotator with a scale for easy adjustment. This feature allows users to save and return to specific camera orientations, making it easier to achieve precise framing during imaging sessions. The rotator is equipped with an enlarged locking screw that ensures stability, even under heavy load conditions.

The SQA85 also incorporates a large 2.8-inch dual-speed focuser with 32mm of focusing travel. This rack-and-pinion focuser is compatible with most motorized focusing systems on the market and is designed for smooth, precise adjustments. Engraved high-precision scales and an anti-reflective internal design further contribute to its ease of use and ability to eliminate stray light, providing the user with crisp and clear images.

The telescope comes equipped with three rear-end thread adapters: M68, M54, and M48. Each adapter is ribbed and designed for secure, slip-free manual adjustments. These adapters allow for quick attachment of various accessories, including full-frame cameras, ensuring a seamless connection experience for astrophotographers.

For those looking to further customize their setup, optional accessories for the SQA85 are available, including an all-metallic handle and a 20mm metallic heightening section. These components offer additional safety and convenience, minimizing the risk of equipment damage and providing extra clearance during operation with equatorial mounts.

In conclusion, the Askar SQA85 offers a comprehensive and advanced solution for astrophotography enthusiasts. Combining high-quality optics, precision engineering, and flexible adaptability, the SQA85 is a powerful tool for capturing the night sky with exceptional detail and clarity.
