INSAP XIII conference call for papers

Queen’s University Belfast has announced the call for papers for the upcoming INSAP XIII conference, Celestial Connections Across Time and Space, scheduled for June 8–13, 2025. This interdisciplinary event aims to bring together scholars, scientists, and artists to explore the connections between celestial phenomena and their influences across various cultural, historical, and academic contexts.

Exploring Celestial Connections Through Time and Space: INSAP XIII conference call for papers

INSAP XIII continues the mission of the Interdisciplinary Study of Astronomical and Other Phenomena in Culture (INSAP), which seeks to bridge the sciences and the arts, promoting dialogue and understanding across diverse fields of inquiry. The conference will examine how the skies, including stars, planets, and other celestial events, have shaped human knowledge, creativity, and culture over time.

The event is open to proposals for oral presentations, posters, and artistic performances on topics such as the historical development of astronomical knowledge, the intersection of astronomy and architecture, celestial depictions in the arts, and the philosophical implications of the cosmos. Discussions will also include the ethical and environmental aspects of space exploration and the role of human imagination in conceptualizing the universe.

Submission guidelines

Participants are invited to submit abstracts of up to 300 words for individual papers or descriptions of artistic works. Each presentation will last approximately 20 minutes. Submissions should include a title, the names and affiliations of authors, a brief biography of up to 150 words, and contact information. Artistic proposals should also include technical requirements for performances.

The deadline for abstract submissions is December 22, 2024, with notifications of acceptance issued by January 20, 2025. All proposals must be submitted via the designated online submission form.

Accepted papers will be considered for publication in a special journal issue of Culture and Cosmos, offering an opportunity for participants to contribute to ongoing discussions at the intersection of astronomy, culture, and the arts.

Queen’s University Belfast will serve as the host venue for this event, offering participants a platform to engage with peers and professionals from various disciplines, fostering collaborations and expanding perspectives on the role of celestial phenomena in shaping human understanding.
