Visit the Vera C Rubin Observatory

Posted on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is nearing the final stages of construction, with its first light anticipated in early 2025. As part of this milestone, the observatory is organizing media visits to its summit facility. These visits, which will take place over a two-month period starting in early 2025, are intended to provide media representatives with an in-depth, firsthand experience of the observatory's operations.

Media visit summit access for Vera C Rubin Observatory

The Rubin Observatory is offering two options for these visits: a single-day trip or a two-day visit with an overnight stay. These visits will be self-funded by the participants. The observatory has curated an experiential tour for the media, which includes witnessing the telescope's operations, such as its rapid slewing capabilities and dome movement. The tour also includes presentations in the control room and opportunities for on-the-record interviews with subject matter experts who are integral to the observatory's work.

Vera C. Rubin Observatory invites media for early 2025 summit visits ahead of first light

To facilitate planning, the Rubin Observatory is soliciting expressions of interest from media professionals, including writers, photographers, and videographers. The observatory has provided a form for interested parties to indicate their preferred visit duration - either one or two days. While the observatory encourages submissions by the end of August, the form will remain open beyond that date. It is emphasized that submitting an expression of interest does not constitute a binding commitment, and those who do not fill out the form by the initial deadline may still have the opportunity to participate later.

This initiative offers a unique opportunity for media representatives to gain comprehensive insight into the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, its cutting-edge technology, and the people driving its mission. The observatory's efforts to engage the media highlight the importance of communicating its scientific endeavors to the broader public as it approaches a significant milestone in its development.
