The Wisconsin Observers Weekend 2024 event lineup

Posted on Thursday, May 9, 2024 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

The Wisconsin Observers Weekend (WOW), hosted by NEWSTAR, is a highly anticipated event for amateur astronomers and their families. From June 6th to 9th, 2024, participants will gather at Hartman Creek State Park, located just west of Waupaca, Wisconsin, to enjoy three days of camping and stargazing. This 1,500-acre park, with post-glacial landscapes and rolling woodlands, provides a beautiful backdrop for outdoor activities like swimming, hiking, biking, and fishing. The park's 10 miles of hiking trails, including the National Scenic Ice Age Trail, offer an abundance of wildflowers and birdwatching opportunities. Biking enthusiasts can explore designated off-road trails or low-traffic roads nearby.

WOW secures all five group campsites at the park to ensure a white-light-free environment, creating optimal stargazing conditions. Although primitive camping is provided, hot showers and modern facilities are accessible nearby. NEWSTAR will also host an ice cream social and door prize drawing on Saturday afternoon.

For those seeking additional amenities, the nearby town of Waupaca offers convenient lodging options, while light pollution remains minimal. Registration includes both the WOW and camping fees, but visitors will need to obtain a state park pass to enter, available for purchase as either an annual or daily pass for residents and non-residents.
