Nahatlatch Valley Star Party

Posted on Saturday, July 12, 2025 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

The upcoming Nahatlatch Valley Star Party in British Columbia is one of the most popular gatherings for amateur astronomers in western Canada. It is a dedicated astronomy event where participants bring their own telescopes and equipment, connect with others who share an interest in astronomy, and spend several nights under exceptionally dark skies. Designed for serious observers and astrophotographers, the star party offers a unique opportunity to experience excellent night-sky conditions away from urban light pollution.

Nahatlatch Valley Star Party 2025: A Star Party for True Astronomy Enthusiasts

Unlike casual stargazing nights that welcome the general public, the Nahatlatch Valley Star Party is designed specifically for amateur astronomers who own and use their own observing equipment. This event caters to those passionate about astronomy who seek to spend uninterrupted nights under Bortle 3 dark skies, pursuing celestial targets and expanding their astrophotography portfolios. The location, tucked away within the secluded Nahatlatch Valley, offers some of the best dark-sky observing conditions in southwestern Canada, far removed from urban light pollution.

For visual observers, the expansive star fields, faint nebulae, and elusive galaxies visible from this site present endless opportunities for discovery. Meanwhile, astrophotographers will appreciate the clarity, low light pollution, and supportive community atmosphere ideal for capturing long-exposure deep-sky images.

The Venue: Washtock Family Campground

The star party will be held on the Washtock Family Campground, a privately owned, off-grid site near Boston Bar. The campground’s remote location, surrounded by rugged natural beauty, offers a true escape into the wilderness while still providing essential amenities. Within the event area of the campground, participants will find space for tents, trailers, and RVs. Pit toilets are available on-site, while the main campground area, accessible to all attendees, offers additional comforts such as flush toilets, hot showers, and a sani-dump station at no extra charge.

The campground store adds convenience by selling basic food items, fresh seasonal vegetables grown on-site, farm-fresh eggs, and free-range beef from the Washtock family farm. It's worth noting that the final six kilometers of the journey to the campground is along a gravel road, which is government-maintained but requires careful driving.

Strict Rules to Preserve the Dark Sky Experience

The organizers have put in place clear rules to ensure the event remains enjoyable, safe, and true to its purpose of dark sky observation. Most importantly, a strict light ban will be enforced from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM each night. This ban covers all forms of white light, including flashlights, vehicle lights, and unshielded trailer or RV lighting. Even electronic devices such as cell phones, tablets, and laptops must be equipped with red filters or set to night mode to prevent disruptions to dark adaptation.

For those needing to move around after dusk, only heavily red-filtered flashlights are permitted. Participants are also asked to cover windows of trailers and RVs with curtains, aluminum foil, or red cellophane to prevent light leakage. Emergency exceptions to the light ban are allowed, provided a verbal warning is given to others on the field.

To protect telescope equipment and maintain a dust-free environment, all vehicles must arrive on-site before dusk and must be driven at an extremely slow pace when entering or exiting the field. Late-arriving vehicles will not be permitted onto the field under any circumstances.

Camping and Comfort Guidelines

Given the off-grid nature of the site, attendees must come prepared. There is no potable water on-site, so participants should bring enough drinking water for the duration of their stay. Non-drinkable water is available at the main campground for washing dishes and other tasks. Electricity is unavailable, so ample batteries or power packs are essential for running equipment.

The weather in the Nahatlatch Valley can be unpredictable, with hot days and cold nights, so participants should pack suitable clothing for a wide range of temperatures. Sunscreen is recommended due to limited shade, and bug spray is advisable as mosquitoes and black flies can be present.

A “pack it in, pack it out” policy is in place to maintain the natural environment, meaning all garbage and waste must be taken home. RV owners with sanitary tanks are encouraged to park away from the pit toilets, as these facilities are limited and intended primarily for tent campers. The campground’s sani-dump is available at no additional charge.

Event Etiquette and Community Considerations

This star party fosters a respectful, quiet atmosphere focused on serious astronomical observing. Participants are expected to adhere to strict noise guidelines, especially in the mornings. Many observers will be up until dawn and asleep until noon, so talking, cooking noises, music, and engine startups should be minimized before midday.

Children are welcome but must be supervised closely, with parents ensuring that their children’s voices remain subdued, especially during the morning hours. Pets are allowed but must be leashed and under control at all times. The hayfields surrounding the campground are off-limits to both people and pets, as they are part of an organic cattle farm operation.

Campfires are strictly prohibited, and smoking or vaping is allowed only in the designated area near the registration tent. Participants are encouraged to refrain from smoking or vaping in their campsites unless inside their camper or RV. Marijuana use is permitted but must not disturb others, and alternative forms of consumption are recommended to maintain the fresh mountain air.

Generators, if used, should be muffled and may only operate between noon and 5:00 PM to preserve the tranquility of the site.

Registration, Fees, and Payment

Attendance is by registration only, with space limited due to campground capacity. Both RASC Vancouver members and non-members are welcome, though a fee applies. Registration is not confirmed until full payment is received, and cancellations made up to 14 days before the event (August 11) are eligible for a full refund.

The fee structure is as follows:

  • RASC Vancouver Members: $20 per night
  • Non-Members: $23 per night
  • Youth under 18: Free

Accepted payment methods include eTransfer, credit card, and cheque. Registration is available online via the official form, and confirmation details, including payment instructions, will be emailed within 24 hours of submission.

Beyond the Star Party: Activities in the Area

For those interested in exploring beyond the event, the Nahatlatch Valley offers an array of outdoor adventures. River rafting is popular along the Nahatlatch, Fraser, and Thompson Rivers. The Nahatlatch River, in particular, offers exciting Class IV-V rapids, especially later in the summer. Guided rafting tours are recommended for safety.

Nahatlatch Provincial Park, located about 25 kilometers (a 40-minute drive) from the campground, features hiking trails and lakes ideal for fishing, though proper licensing is required. One notable hike is the Mehatl Creek Falls trail, an 8-kilometer round trip offering scenic views and modest elevation gain. Hikers are advised to research conditions and safety information in advance. Interested participants are encouraged to register early to secure their spot, come well-prepared for an off-grid experience, and embrace the spirit of shared discovery under the stars.
