Meade microfocuser stepper upgrade

Posted on Monday, December 9, 2024 by RICHARD HARRIS, Executive Editor

Rigel Systems has announced a simple solution for upgrading Meade microfocusers to stepper motors, enhancing the precision and functionality of telescope focusing systems. The process was first explored following an inquiry from an Australian customer who requested a modification after viewing a similar upgrade on a YouTube video. The customer sent in their Meade microfocuser, and the upgrade was completed efficiently, confirming the feasibility of such modifications.

The Meade microfocuser stepper upgrade details

This upgrade is particularly compatible with existing Rigel Systems products, including the USB-nSTEP and wifi-nSTEP controllers. For users who already own these controllers, the process involves adding a stepper motor that integrates seamlessly with the Meade microfocuser. Rigel Systems encourages users to send their microfocusers to their facility for installation, ensuring the upgrade is completed quickly and correctly.

For those without a Rigel Systems controller, the company offers a complete package, including the stepper motor and controller. Alternatively, users with other controllers, such as bipolar systems, can opt for the standalone stepper kit. This flexibility allows users to adapt the solution to their existing setups without requiring a wholesale replacement of components.

The wifi-nFOCUS controller, which can be paired with the upgraded Meade microfocuser, offers several features designed for precise and reliable focusing. The controller is fully ASCOM-compliant, enabling compatibility with popular focus control programs. It also includes an encoded DC motor for temperature compensation, a feature critical for maintaining focus as temperature changes affect telescope components.

The wifi-nFOCUS system supports multiple connection options, including USB, integrated push buttons, and Wi-Fi for control via smartphones, tablets, or PCs. Its design is modular, allowing users to purchase only the components they need and providing an affordable path for future upgrades. This approach simplifies maintenance and ensures compatibility with a range of telescopes and accessories.

One notable advantage of the wifi-nFOCUS system is its lightweight design. Adding only 160 grams to the telescope, it avoids interference with the mount even at high elevations. The gear-coupled motor prevents binding of the focuser shaft, providing 4,300 steps per revolution for smooth and precise adjustments. Additionally, the system offers fast focusing capabilities, reaching speeds of up to 300 degrees per second.

If you have a Rigel systems usb-nSTEP or wifi-nSTEP and a Meade microfocuser, its a quick and easy upgrade

The wifi-nFOCUS system also integrates ALPACA protocols, a network-based standard extending the capabilities of traditional ASCOM drivers. This ensures compatibility across multiple platforms and devices, including smartphones and tablets, enhancing the user experience.

Temperature control is another key feature. The included external temperature sensor provides precise ambient measurements, enabling autofocus software to compensate for thermal expansion and contraction of the telescope tube. Unlike internal sensors, which can be influenced by the heat generated by electronic components, the external sensor delivers more accurate readings, further improving focus stability.

The upgrade is available for a wide range of Meade and Celestron SCT models, including pre-2006 versions. Custom kits include all necessary components, such as brackets, gears, and mounting hardware, tailored to specific telescope sizes. Users can expand their systems by adding additional kits for different telescopes, allowing the motor and controller to be swapped between setups as needed.
