Every year, amateur astronomers from across the United States and beyond descend upon one of Florida's most renowned dark-sky destinations, the Chiefland Astronomy Village. This October, the beloved Chiefland Astrofest returns, offering a full week of celestial observing, top-tier astrophotography opportunities, educational presentations, equipment swap meets, and camaraderie under some of the clearest skies in the country. From October 17 through October 23, 2025, the Billy Dodd Memorial Observing Field will transform into a bustling hub for stargazers, imagers, and astronomy enthusiasts of all skill levels.
The Chiefland Astronomy Village (CAV) has built a national reputation for its pristine observing conditions and welcoming community. Located near Florida's west coast, approximately one hour west of Gainesville and two hours northwest of Orlando, the site offers accessibility without sacrificing the dark-sky experience.
The Village's premier observing area, the Billy Dodd Memorial Field, is a private five-acre site designed specifically for amateur astronomers. The field offers 360 degrees of unobstructed horizon, providing unparalleled views of the night sky. Flat, well-maintained ground makes setup easy for tents, telescopes, and RVs alike, while on-site amenities like flushable restrooms, hot showers, a clubhouse, electricity, and covered picnic areas ensure comfort during the event.

October evenings typically bring cool, pleasant temperatures ranging from 55° to 65° F, with daytime highs between 70° and 80° F. Due to the popularity of Astrofest and limited space on the observing field, pre-registration is essential. The event offers a variety of site options to accommodate different setups:
Electricity on the observing field is limited, so participants are encouraged to bring batteries to power telescopes, cameras, and other devices. Flushable restrooms with sinks and air conditioning, as well as warm showers, are available on-site to enhance comfort.
While October typically brings favorable observing conditions to Florida, weather unpredictability is always a consideration. In the event of severe weather, including hurricanes, the organizers have implemented a contingency plan.
If a hurricane forces the postponement of Astrofest 2025, the event will be rescheduled for the next new moon week, November 14 – 20, 2025. All registrations will automatically transfer to the new dates. If attendees are unable to make the rescheduled event, refunds will be provided, minus a $20 administrative fee.
